“Yeah?”

“I dislike that name and never want to hear it again.”

“Why? What’s wrong with Kendra?”

“I went to high school with a girl named Kendra, and she was the school whore. You want to name your daughter after a whore?” My brow raised.

“Just throwing it out there, babe. I love you.” He opened the door and walked out.

I rolled my eyes, grabbed my purse, and drove to the bakery. When I stepped inside, Barb was already there.

“Good morning.” I smiled.

“Look at you. You grew overnight.”

“Right? That’s what I thought this morning when I looked in the mirror.

I went into the kitchen, where my staff was already baking their little hearts out. As I was in the middle of making macarons, Barb walked in.

“Zoey, there’s a woman here to see you.”

“Oh, okay. Tell her I’ll be out in a second.”

I went over to the sink and washed my hands. After drying them, I walked out of the kitchen, and my heart started racing when I saw my mother standing there.

“Zoey?” Her eyes widened. “You’re pregnant?”

“Mom, what are you doing here?” I sighed. “How did you know where to find me? Wait, let me guess, Cara?”

“No. The last time we spoke, you said you moved to Los Angeles. I knew you came here to open a bakery, and when I pulled up bakeries, Baked With Love was the first one that popped up. You must be paying a fortune to have the top spot. Anyway, I knew it was yours because that’s what your grandmother always used to say.” She looked at my ring finger. “You got married?”

“Yeah, I did. Three months ago.”

“She’s married to the most wonderful man,” Barb said. “I’m Barb.” She extended her hand.

“It’s nice to meet you, Barb. I’m Alyssa, Zoey’s mother. I can’t believe you couldn’t be bothered to tell me that you were getting married and having a baby.”

“I’ve been really busy, Mom. Just like you were my entire life. Now isn’t the time or place to discuss it.”

“Your bakery is very nice. I’m sure it’s doing well.”

“It’s doing very well. If you’ll excuse me, I have to get back to my macarons.” I walked back into the kitchen and let out a breath. I couldn’t believe she was here. She was the last person I needed to see right now.

Grabbing my phone, I called Carter.

“Hey, babe. I love you, but I can’t talk right now. Is it an emergency?”

“No. I’ll talk to you later. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Your mother left, Zoey,” Barb said as she stepped into the kitchen. “I knew things weren’t the greatest with you two, but I had no idea you didn’t tell her about Carter or the baby.”

“It’s none of her business, Barb. She lost the right to know anything about my life the day she asked my grandmother if she would raise me because partying was more important.”

“Oh, dear. I didn’t know that.”

“There’s a lot you don’t know.”
