“I’m sorry, Zoey.”

“I appreciate it, but don’t be. I’m okay and always have been.”

It was five o’clock when a text came through from Carter.

“I’m home, babe. I would have called you on my way, but I got tied up on a business call.”

“I’m just leaving the bakery now. Get Ben and Jerry ready, please.”

“Are you okay?”

“Just a little stressed today. I’ll see you in five.”

Carter ran down the stairs when he heard the front door open.

“Hi.” He smiled, wrapping his arms around me. “Why are you stressed? You know I don’t like to hear that. It’s not good for you or Rachel.”

I broke our embrace, reached up, and kissed his lips.

“If you think we’re naming our daughter Rachel, you can forget it.” I set my purse down and grabbed the open pint of Ben and Jerry’s on the island.

“What’s wrong with the name Rachel?”

“It reminds me of Friends.” I shoved a spoonful of ice cream in my mouth.

“And? I always had the hots for Rachel.” He smirked.

“You’re sick.” I pointed my spoon at him.

He chuckled and walked over to me. “What’s wrong?”

“My mom came into the bakery today.” I shoved my spoon into the container of ice cream.

“Shit. That’s why you called. Babe, I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. I know how busy you are.”

“What did she want?”

“I don’t know. She didn’t say. She was too shocked when she saw my belly and this rock on my finger.”

There was a knock at the door.

“Who could that be?” Carter asked.

“Probably UPS or Amazon. I have an order coming.”

He opened the door, and I heard my mother’s voice. I froze for a moment and then quietly slipped out the sliding door, running over to Riley’s pottery shed.

“Hey, Aunt Zoey.” She smiled.

“Hi, sweetheart. If you don’t mind, I need to hide out here.”

“Not at all. Who are you hiding from?”

“My mother.”

“Oh.” She twisted her face.
