“I followed you home from the bakery. I didn’t like the way we left things. I wanted to apologize.”

“For what?” I asked.

“For not being there for you all those years. As I get older, I realize what a mistake I made.”

I stood and stared at her. Was she trying to make me feel sorry for her? Yeah. It’s what she did. It wasn’t worth the argument. I would never forgive her or let her into my life completely.

“I appreciate that, Mom. I know it took a lot for you to apologize.”

“Can we start over, Zoey?”

“Where’s what his name?”

“He’s back at the hotel. I told him I wanted to see you alone. You didn’t answer my question. Can we start over so I can get to know my daughter?”

“You know what, Mom? I needed you when I was growing up. You were my mom. Even after Dad told you that he couldn’t stick around anymore after having me for six months, you didn’t care. I was listening that night. Dad called you. He had you on speaker, and he didn’t know I was there. Your exact words were, ‘I don’t have time in my life right now to raise a kid. Take her back to my parents’ house. They’ll take care of her.’ So, you standing there asking me if we could start over really sucks. You shouldn’t have to start over to get to know your child. Just because right now is convenient for you, it isn’t for me. I don’t have time in my life right now to get to know my parent. So, go back to your boyfriend or husband, or whatever the hell he is, and don’t come back. You no longer get to pop in and out of my life when it suits you.”

“How dare you,” she said.

“Go on. You heard her. Get out of my house,” Carter said.

“Fine. If that’s how you want it, Zoey.” She gripped her purse strap and walked out the door.

“You never told me any of that,” Carter turned and wrapped his arms around me.

“It doesn’t matter anymore.”

“Are you okay, babe?”

“Do you see tears?” I broke our embrace and stared into his eyes.

“No.”

“Exactly. I stopped crying over her years ago. What’s for dinner? I’m starving.”

“You just downed a half a pint of Ben and Jerry’s.”

“What’s your point, Carter?” I narrowed my eyes at him.

His phone dinged in his pocket, and when he pulled it out and looked at it, a smile crossed his face.

“It looks like we’re having hospital food. Grace is in labor. They’re on their way to the hospital now.”

“Let’s go.” I grinned.

CHAPTER 38

Carter

Before we went to the hospital, Zoey insisted we stop at Taco Bell. She didn’t want cafeteria food, and after the day she had, I wasn’t arguing with her. After we quickly ate our food in the car, we went up to the labor and delivery waiting room, where the rest of the family was waiting.

“There you are. What took you so long?” Grayson asked. “You left before we did.”

“Pregnant mama wanted Taco Bell.” I smirked.

“Oh.” Grayson chuckled.

We were only there for two hours when Simon walked in and announced that Milo Simon Kind had arrived.
