“The girls will.”

“No, they won’t. I’ll make sure of that. Thank you for the pineapple crisp. It was the best I ever had.” He kissed the tip of my nose and walked away.

“Is that the only thing that was the best you ever had?” I asked.

He stopped, turned around, and smiled as he stared at me. “Wouldn’t you love to know.” He went upstairs.

My phone pinged, and when I picked it up, I saw a text message from Shaun.

“Good morning. Roman will be over at my house around one o’clock.”

“Okay. I’ll see you then.”

Walking up the stairs, I stepped into the bedroom to change into my clothes from yesterday. I had enough time to go home, shower, and change before returning to meet Shaun.

“Hey.” Carter smiled. “What are you doing?”

“Shaun just texted me and said Roman will be over at one. I need to go home, shower, and change.”

“Hold on a second. I’ll follow you and then drive you back.”

“Why?” I asked.

“Because after your meeting with Shaun and Roman, I’m taking you somewhere.”

“I have things to do, Carter. You seem to dismiss the fact that I moved to Los Angeles to open a bakery, and I have a million things to do.”

“I’m not dismissing anything, Zoey. It’s Saturday. What can you possibly do?”

“I have a business plan to create!” I spoke with irritation.

“You haven’t done that yet?” His brows furrowed. “That should have been done before you rented the building.”

“I haven’t had time. Between my grandmother dying, getting her affairs settled, my job back in Sacramento, the relationship with Quinton I sabotaged, getting settled in my new apartment, buying a new car, and doing work for Shaun, I haven’t had a chance!”

CHAPTER 16

Carter

She was visibly upset, and that was the last thing I wanted to do to her. I walked over to where she stood in the middle of my bedroom and wrapped my arms around her.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“I’m not upset. I just have a lot to do.” She broke our embrace. “But you’re right. It is Saturday, and there isn’t much I can do. Where do you want to take me later?” she sighed.

“You’ll see.” I winked.

“I’ll only go with you on one condition?”

“What’s your condition?”

“You fill me in on that naughty daddy of yours.”

“I’ll tell you everything I know. I never met the man myself. I only know what my Auntie Fran told me about him and my mother, and I only know a little about him from Grayson and Gabriel.”

“That’s fine. I’ll take what I can get.” She smirked. “Let’s go.”

We stepped into her apartment, and she told me to wait while she quickly took a shower and got ready. I was thirsty, so I opened the refrigerator for a bottle of water and noticed she didn’t have any. Opening her cabinets, I found a glass and put it under the ice dispenser. It sounded like the ice was jammed, so I opened her freezer and stared at the six pints of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, staring back at me.
