“Deal.” He smiled as his lips met mine. “Remember, not a word about the boat.”

“I won’t say a word. I promise.”

As soon as we arrived at Carter’s house, he grabbed some beer from the refrigerator, and we headed down the beach.

“Hey, Zoey.” The guys waved.

“Where have you been, bro?” Grayson asked.

“We went to the Santa Monica Pier,” he said.

“It was a lot of fun.” I smiled.

“Zoey, the girls are at my house if you want to join them,” Conner said.

“Do you mind?” I asked Carter.

“Not at all. I’ll walk you over.” He placed his hand on the small of my back.

He opened the sliding door to Conner’s house, and I stepped inside.

“You’re here!” Piper ran over and grabbed my hand. “We weren’t sure what happened to you and Carter after your meeting with Shaun.”

“He took me to the Santa Monica Pier,” I said.

“Wine?” Charlotte held up the bottle.

“Of course.” I grinned.

“What did you do at the pier?” Jenni asked.

“Oh, just walked around, talked, and grabbed something to eat.”

“Which restaurant?” Georgia asked.

“Um, I can’t recall the name. We had seafood.”

“Oh, so you must have gone to Crabby Joe’s with those cute little plastic bibs with the lobsters on it.” Julia smiled.

“Yes! That’s the place.” I pointed at her. “Those bibs are cute.”

They all stood there, narrowing their eyes at me.

“You’re lying,” Jenni said.

“There isn’t a restaurant on the Pier called Crabby Joe’s,” Sofia said.

“The closest one is ten miles from here,” Charleigh chimed in.

“What’s going on, Zoey?” Grace asked as all the girls stepped closer to me.

Shit. They knew I lied.

“What’s so secretive about today with Carter that you lied to us?” Ava asked.

“Ugh. I can’t tell you. I promised Carter.”

“Listen, honey,” Georgia grabbed my hand. “It’s okay. We sisters have a code. And that code is to tell each other everything, even when our husbands make us promise not to.”
