“What happened to Katniss?” I noticed the damage to the front end. “Were you in an accident?”

“It’s none of your business.” She yanked her arm from my grip. “Go be with your family and leave me alone.”

CHAPTER 26

Zoey

I climbed into my car and drove off. Now wasn’t the time or place to discuss it. He had the chance yesterday before wanting me out of his house before he returned from surfing. Whatever he was mad at me for, I no longer cared, even though it kept the tears falling all night.

I was sitting on the couch, dipping my spoon into Ben and Jerry, when there was a knock at the door.

“Zoey, I know you’re home. Open up.”

Rolling my eyes, I walked over to the door. “Go away, Carter.”

“I’m not leaving until we talk. I want to set things straight about yesterday. And if you don’t let me in, I’ll keep pounding and shouting until your neighbors call the cops. I don’t care.”

I hastily opened the door and stared at him for a moment before moving out of the way and letting him in.

“Whatever you have to say, say it and leave,” I said as I shut the door.

“You broke your promise to me, Zoey.”

“What are you talking about?” I furrowed my brows.

“You told the girls about the boat when you promised you wouldn’t. You broke my trust.”

“That’s what you’re so pissed about? They didn’t say anything, so what’s the big deal?” I threw my arms out.

“The big deal is I trusted you with something personal, and you promised me you wouldn’t tell anyone. Yet, you did the first chance you got.”

“That is not how it went down!” I shouted, pointing my finger at him. “I told them we went to the Santa Monica Pier, we had dinner, and it was seafood. They somehow knew I was lying because they threw out the name of a restaurant, and I said it was where we ate. How was I to know that the restaurant didn’t exist there?”

“Then you could have made something up,” he shouted. “But no, you went and told them the truth of where I took you that day.”

“I’m sorry, Carter. I honestly had no idea that it would upset you this much.”

“I told you that I don’t trust women as it was, and now, you’re just another one I can’t trust when I thought I could.”

I stood there and stared at him as the tears tried to force their way into my eyes. I refused to let him see me that way.

“I’m sorry you feel that way, Carter. I guess I’m just too untrustworthy to hang around with. Get out.” I pointed to the door. “And another thing. It’s good this happened because I would have walked away in less than six months. So, you just dodged a bullet, Mr. Kind.”

“What are you talking about?” His eyes narrowed.

“You heard what I said. Now, get out.”

“Whatever, Zoey.” He stormed out of my apartment and slammed the door.

The tears that I held back came falling full force. I grasped my heart. It hurt. I grabbed my Ben and Jerry’s and looked at it, and suddenly, I couldn’t bring myself to eat it. I felt sick as the tears continued to fall down my face. I picked up my phone, called Cara, and told her everything that happened.

The first thing I did the following morning was go to the bank. Gracie greeted me with delight and asked how she could help me.

“What can I do for you, Miss Morgan?” She smiled.

“I would like to apply for another business loan since Mr. Keys was a sexist fool and denied me based on my gender.”

“Mr. Kind told me that Carter Management Group was investing in your business.”
