“Things have changed, and I no longer want his money.”

“I see.” She folded her hands on her desk.

“Here is my business plan.” I handed her the folder. “The total on the bottom of the page is the amount I need.”

“This business plan is very impressive. I see you’re good with numbers.”

“I’m a genius when it comes to numbers. I was a forensic accountant before I decided to open a bakery.”

“I’ll tell you what. I like you, Miss Morgan. You have my sincere apology for what Mr. Keys did. I’m going to go ahead and approve your business loan myself. I’ll call you later this afternoon when the paperwork is ready to be signed.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it.” I stood up and extended my hand.

“You’re very welcome.” She smiled as she lightly shook my hand.

Carter

I was reviewing some documents in my office when my door opened, and my secretary stepped in.

“Excuse me, Carter. This was sitting on my desk when I returned from lunch.”

I took the white envelope from her hand and removed the cashier’s check inside, made payable to Carter Management Group for the exact amount of my investment in Zoey’s bakery.

“Goddamnit,” I shouted as I stood from my chair. “What the fuck is she doing? I’ll be down at Shaun’s office.” I stormed out.

“What’s up?” Shaun smiled when I entered his office.

“This.” I threw the check on his desk.

He picked it up and looked at it.

“I don’t understand. What is this for?” His brows furrowed.

“That’s my investment in Zoey’s bakery.” I placed my hands on my hips and paced around his office.

“Carter, I don’t understand what you mean. What is going on?”

“She must have gone and seen Gracie at the bank. That’s the only way she would have gotten the money to return to me.”

“Why would she do that? What the hell happened between the two of you?” He stood up.

“You know what? It doesn’t matter. If she doesn’t want me investing, fine. I don’t give a shit.” I stormed out of his office.

I told Carly I was leaving for the day, climbed into my car, and drove to Zoey’s apartment. Her car wasn’t in the parking lot, so I went to the bakery. When I stepped inside, I saw her talking to Ava.

“Really, Zoey?” I shouted over all the noise of the construction.

“I assume you got the check,” she said.

“Yeah. I did. What the fuck are you thinking?”

“What is going on?” Ava asked.

“I’m not discussing this now.” She began to walk away, so I grabbed her arm and stopped her.

“Let go of her now, Kind!”

I glanced over and stared at Ava. “This is between Zoey and me, Kate.”
