“Roxbury, listen to me…”

“I said no, damn it!”

I threw down the fork I had picked up and shoved the plate of nameless stew away from me so hard it rattled the other dishes. “Why do you have to be such a dick!”

“That’s Captain Dick to you, and you’re in my waters now, boy.”

I jumped up from the table, blazing mad as only Roxbury had ever been able to make me. Intending to stomp back over to the bed. Or at least, I tried to jump up, but the chair hadn’t scooted backward far enough and got caught in the rug. The chair fell over backward with me in it, flinging me violently to the floor. I hit my head and bruised my back, not to mention my pride.

I just lay there moaning with my eyes closed for a moment, despising my disability and too embarrassed to open them and see the derision in his eyes. I planned on staying there until he left or went to bed—whichever came first—but I was suddenly unceremoniously scooped up in Roxbury’s strong arms.

“Are you all right? Damn it, speak to me.”

I began to flail a little, not being used to anyone carting me around. He quickly set me back down on my feet and glared at me. “You fell.”

“I’m aware of that, but I can walk.”

“Can you? That’s maybe the third fucking time you’ve fallen since I captured you. Tell me what those idiot doctors say is wrong with you!”

“Why are you shouting? I’m right here. And I told you what they said. It will pass!”

He swept a hand through his hair. He followed me over to the bed where I sat down, and he fell down beside me. He leaned over me, gazing at me from only inches away, looking like he wanted to murder me. “What if it doesn’t? What if it only gets worse? What if…”

“No. Stop it. They said I sustained a slight brain injury that left me with some weakness in my right side. They think I’ll be fine, eventually, but it may take a little time. I’ve been trying to exercise my leg and my arm, so they’ll get stronger.”

“Obviously, that hasn’t worked.”

“Not yet, no. But I think it will.”

“Oh good, you think it will. Why didn’t you just say so?”

“Oh, shut up.”

“And what has your so-called Alpha pack done about it? Lexington and Asher, with all their so-called magic? Not to mention Wyatt, who could probably huff and puff and blow it all away.

I assume you’re still with them.” He gave me a narrow look. “Unless you’re married by now to some omega with a whole group of children.”

“I’m not married, no. Not yet anyway.”

“And what does that mean?”

“It means I’m engaged. To Prince Chandler of Sudfarma.”

“I’ve heard of your little prince. An omega. His father is quite wealthy, which is good for me and my men. They’ll pay a lot to get you back.”

“Don’t be so unpleasant. I demand you let me go at once and put me off at the nearest port.”

“Not likely.”

“I don’t understand how you’re like this now. How did you become a pirate of all things? They’ll hang you when they catch you, Roxbury.”

“Then I’ll have to make sure they don’t, won’t I?”

I folded my arms over my chest, at a complete loss for words. He seemed more and more like a stranger to me, which I realized he was, after so many years had passed. My heart gave a funny lurch in my chest, and it was like a physical pain. I reached up to rub it, and he seized my hand.

“What now? Are you in pain? Did you pull a muscle?”

Jerking my hand away, I glared at him. “I’m fine.”
