“Are you planning to visit Yagger today?”

“Sure.”

“I’d like to go.”

I realize he can’t ride over on his own with how his leg’s acting up. With my focus so solidly on Austen, I’d forgotten to be a benevolent dictator. I never checked on anyone yesterday.

For a moment, I’m paralyzed with stress. Too many people need too much from me.

The attack nearly killed my people, but it’s also why I have Austen. I want nothing more than to hide away with her and forget everything else.

I feel overwhelmed and stretched too thin. My parents’ voices get louder, barking expectations at me. I feel like I’m stuck back in a prison with years left on my sentence.

Holding the keys to my freedom, Austen appears. Her damp hair is up in a ponytail. She’s wearing a gray tank top and faded denim. She looks healthy and inviting. Her smile breaks through the noise in my head.

I remember how today isn’t my enemy. I’ll visit my club brother. Austen can chill with her bestie. Today, she’ll share her body with me. Nothing is stealing her away. I can step back from her for a few hours without Austen falling apart or running home.

The look on her face when she wraps her arms around me belongs to a woman with forever on her mind.

AUSTEN

Surrounded by the other Pigsty residents at breakfast, Coco texts me to ask if I got laid last night. I reply with an eggplant emoticon. She snickers, drawing the attention of the others sitting with us at the table. Goose narrows her blue eyes as if Coco is causing trouble.

“Sigh,” Coco texts me.

Nodding, I reply with, “I think you broke something inside that woman, and she’s holding a grudge.”

“Is that a compliment or an insult?”

“What do you think?”

Coco looks at me across from her at the table. When I smile, she replies in kind.

“Is WW good in bed?” she texts.

“Very much so. I’m not just saying that because he’s spying.”

We smile at Walla Walla who grins and wraps an arm around me.

Nearby, Tomcat groans as if our lovey-dovey behavior has harmed his manhood.

“The sex addict wishes you’d break something in him,” I text to Coco, and Walla Walla nods.

Coco smirks yet doesn’t look at Tomcat. Her gaze finds Goose who is still frowning at her.

“I’m riding with you to the hospital,” Goose grumbles before peeling her attention from Coco and scowling at Walla Walla. “I want to see Yagger.”

“Who will stay here and protect our guests?” Walla Walla asks.

“I’ve got errands to run,” Tomcat replies.

Dice hides behind his sunglasses and mumbles about how he can’t be in charge. Walla Walla looks to Hobo sitting at the end of the table with Xenia.

“Will you be around?”

Hobo glances at Xenia before frowning at everyone staring at him. “Why wouldn’t I want to visit Yagger?”

“You can visit him later,” Walla Walla insists. “You’re needed here. We have a guy with a head injury and three lovely ladies with minimal fighting skills.”
