Today, though, Henry was downstairs somewhere, and Eva was laughing at whichever of my asshole roommates was pushing the boundaries of our friendship. I’d told them. She’s here as a last resort. Don’t adopt her.

She laughed again, and the sound of the door slamming shut cut it off. A strained silence followed, then I heard Danny’s voice. Fuck. I took off down the stairs, completely abandoning my plan to avoid Eva until she moved out or graduated.

I skidded to a stop in the living room and took a second to get my bearings. Of course, it was all of them. Even Mase was getting in on the action. He had his back to the room while he ate, but I knew him. If he wasn’t interested, he’d have taken his food downstairs. Eva was sitting on the couch, sandwiched between Cole and Reece, though neither of them was touching her, and all three were staring at Danny, who had a shit eating grin on his face.

The asshole was wearing my favorite shirt again. TU hockey was emblazoned on the front, and he was all sweaty, as if he’d just come from practice. Since I hadn’t heard his motorcycle,my bet was he’d walked here from Wildcat and wanted a ride somewhere. As I watched Danny’s gaze lift from Eva to me, Henry waddled over from the kitchen and quacked at my feet.

Eva’s head whipped around, and her mouth formed an O.

Danny chuckled. “I guess you didn’t tell her about me. That explains all the scowling when she comes in to get coffee.”

Eva’s icy eyes speared in my direction, but I didn’t offer an explanation. Disappointment flashed there for a split second before she turned back to my brother. “Who are you?”

Cole spared me a glance, and I nodded for him to go ahead and tell her. “Danny King, Gavin’s brother. He goes to TU too, and I’m guessing you already know he works at Wildcat Coffee.”

Eva glared at everyone in the living room, even the back of Mase’s head, as Danny leaned against the wall, soaking in the drama he’d caused. “No one thought to tell me?”

Reece wisely stayed silent, but Cole took the hit. “It’s not a big deal.”

She sent him a wounded look. “It’s not a big deal you lied to me?”

He winced. “Sorry, Eva, but I thought you knew.”

“You thought I knew Gavin was an evil twin?”

“You know everything. How could you have missed that?”

She grunted in frustration. “Because I purposely avoid learning anything about my asshole nemesis.”

Henry sat on my foot, demanding attention, so I scooped her up before joining the rest of them in the living room. “Can’t stop thinking about me, huh?”

She stared at the ceiling for a five count, probably imagining her hands around my neck. I wouldn’t mind a little throat play, but it wouldn’t be her hands aroundmythroat. I pushed the image out of my mind and dumped her duck in her lap.

Danny didn’t miss the exchange, and his brows went up. “So itislike that. I thought so.”

Both Eva and I glared at him, but neither of us denied it. Why would we? It should be obvious to anyone with eyeballs we hated each other.

“What do you need?” I asked him instead.

“A ride. Motorcycle’s in the shop, and I have a shift tonight at Greenfield.”

I reared back. “I didn’t know you were working at Greenfield.”

The ice rink was on the poorer side of town near the bars and Papi’s Taco Stand. It must have been built more than twenty years ago, but the Greenfield family kept it running for the locals. I’d been there a couple of times when TU was doing maintenance work on our rink.

He shrugged. “Guess you don’t know everything either.”

Mase stood from his spot. “I’ll take you. I need to run some errands anyway.” He put his bowl in the sink and nodded at the door. “You ready now?”

Danny cut his eyes to Eva, but he must have thought better of whatever crossed his mind. “Sure,” he told Mase.

“Thanks,” I mumbled, and Mase slapped my shoulder as he walked past.

The door closed to silence again, but this time I was downstairs in the middle of it. Exactly where I’d promised myself not to be. I crossed my arms and narrowed my eyes at my two best friends sitting on either side of the woman who hated my guts.

“What’s going on?”

Reece gave me wide, innocent eyes. “Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Cole and I were going to play some NHL14, but Eva was watching a trick competition?—”
