She stands from her chair and spins around to face me, her eyes boring into mine.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothin’.”

“You’re being rude,” she tells me. I smirk. Rude? Really?

“I’m not bein’ anything. I’m just statin’ the facts, Princess. Once you go back to your life, you’ll forget all about us,” I tell her truthfully. Maybe I’m pushing her buttons. Maybe I want to be an ass. I don’t know what my problem is right now, but she’s my target. I turn to walk away from her when she grabs my arm and pulls me back around to face her.

“What’s wrong, Ridge? Did I do something?” I shake my head. Fuck, I’m being a real asshole here.

“No. You didn’t. It’s just me. I’m sorry, Princess.” I tell her before resting my hands on her shoulders and rubbing down her arms.

“Are you okay?”

“I don’t know what I am right now. I’m a little uneasy,” I tell her.

“You want to talk about it?”

“No.” With that, I lean in, press a kiss to her forehead, and turn to walk away once more. I don’t bother looking back as I grab a beer from the bar and pop the top off, taking a long pull. I’m leaning against the bar when Tracy, one of the club girls, walks up to me. I’m not interested, and she knows it, so I don’t know why she’s approaching me other than to make Olson jealous.

“You look down. I can help bring you up,” she purrs as she runs her hand down my arm. My eyes shoot to hers, a glare she knows all too well. I’ve never really liked Tracy, and I can’t place why, but there’s just something about her that rubs me the wrong way.

“You can’t bring shit,” I tell her before taking another drink of my beer.

“Come on, Ridge. Let me make you feel better,” she coos before dropping to her knees in front of me. She reaches for the button on my jeans as my eyes slowly come to meet Olson’s. Her eyes widen when she sees what Tracy is trying to do. That’s when I stop her. I slap her hands away and shove off the bar, heading straight toward Olson.

“We’re leavin’.”

“What the hell was that?” she snaps loudly. Loud enough that half the club heard her. Heads turn, and eyes burn through me as they all wait for me to say something.

“It was nothin’.”

“Didn’t look like nothing!”

“What the hell do you want from me, Olson? I’m doin’ my goddamn job here!” I snap back at her.

“Now I’m just a job?”

“That’s all you’ve been, is a job.” I’m lying. We all know I’m lying, and I can’t seem to stop myself. I hate the idea of losing her once this is all over, so this is the best way to protect myself by pushing her away now. I need to keep my distance.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” she snaps, but I see the tears in her eyes. I’m just another man in her life who’s probably hurt her.

“No. Let’s go.” She stands still for a long moment before she realizes where she is. Then she grabs her things and storms out the door with me right behind her.

We climb in the car, and I take off, driving faster than I need to. I’m pissed off. I’m pissed at myself for letting myself feel anything. I should have kept my distance from her. She should have had a job, and that was it.

“You really feel that way?” she asks softly as I speed through the streets.

“We’re two different people. Look where we are,” I tell her. She turns her head and looks out the window at the side of town she would never dare venture over to on her own. She’s too good for me.

“That means nothing.”

“It means everything, Olson.”

“And you’re just now deciding this?” she asks, crossing her arms over her chest. I glance over at her, and she looks angry. I drag my eyes back to the road and keep driving in silence until we get back into her neighborhood.

We pull into the driveway when I notice a box sitting on the porch. I motion for Olson to stay in the car as I climb out and walk slowly to the front door. I glance around, making sure the area is clear before I squat down and rip the box open. Inside, I find pictures of Olson half-naked. I flip through the photos, but I notice none of them are from her house. They’re from different places, and they look like a hotel.
