He literallygrowlsat me.

I try not to notice the way my core clenches at the sound.

“Why don’t you go see Phoenix. I’ll come by after work and we can get started on stuff here,” he suggests.

“No.”

He curses under his breath this time and then with a resigned sigh, he steps toward me, bends, and throws me over his shoulder.

“Umph!” I grunt as I land on his thick shoulder.

He starts to stride toward the front door and I squirm, kicking out my feet.

“Hey! Put me down!” I demand. What the hell is happening?

“No. If you won’t wait for me, then I’ll have to take you to work with me instead.”

“I’ll just leave,” I threaten and he chuckles.

“I’m not worried. I’m faster than you.”

“Oh!” I snarl and his grip on me tightens.

I'm sure that we make a weird sight as he carries me down the sidewalk, but no one stops to help or to ask what's going on. I keep expecting him to set me down, adjust my position, or take a break. After all, I'm not exactly light or small, but he's totally unphased.

Ryker marches up the steps of City Hall and I try to grab onto the door frame as he heads inside, but I’m no match against him. He walks into what looks to be a conference room and deposits me in a chair in the corner.

“Want a coffee?” he asks me and I glare up at him.

“No.”

“Suit yourself.”

He heads over to the table set up in the corner across from me and grabs a cup, filling it with coffee. I stand, eyeing his back, but before I can make a break for it, he speaks.

“Iwillchase you, and Iwillcatch you.”

With a frustrated groan, I sit back down.

CHAPTER SIX

RYKER

Griffin walks into the office and finds Eden and I glaring at each other. I see him smirk as he grabs his own coffee and takes a seat across from me.

“Morning. Eden, it’s nice to see you again,” he says, eyeing me with a knowing look.

I can tell it’s killing him that he can’t ask me what’s going on between us. I need to get this meeting over with so I can take Eden home and help her fix that disaster that she calls a house. Besides, she should be resting. She lost some blood this morning.

I smelled her blood as soon as I walked past her house and my wolf and I jumped into action. It was an automatic reaction to knowing our mate was in danger. Thank God her door was unlocked or I would have broken it open and then she’d be even more pissed with me.

My wolf paces inside of me, pausing every few moments to paw at my chest. He loved feeling her curvy body against ours as we headed into town. Loved that everyone we passed knew she was ours. He wants to get her scent all over us so that every shifter knows we’ve found our mate. Unfortunately for both ofus, I don’t think Eden is going to let us get that close to her for a while.

She's still glaring at me as we go over potential budgets for the fire and police department. By the time lunch rolls around, it's clear that we need to be done for the day. I'm so distracted by Eden being here, that I have to ask Griffin to repeat himself every other time he says something.

“I’ll see you guys later,” Griffin says as he stands.

He walks past me and leans in to whisper.
