“We just keep doin’ what we do. I never thought I’d admit this, but I’ll feel a lot more comfortable being the Mayor than having anyone else in charge.” All those years Walker was running things, we had no idea what he was capable of. I feel disgusted when I think about him and what he achieved right under our noses.

“What the hell happened to us?” Wade chuckles. “I can’t even remember how it was before them.”

“We got real fuckin’ lucky, Wade.” Cole looks back over his shoulder, taking in the same scene I just did. “Real fuckin lucky,” he whispers to himself.

Two Months Later

“He’s adorable,” Savannah coos over my new nephew, and my little brother who looks like he’s gonna burst with pride as he holds his new son in his arms.

“Come on, let me hold him.” Maisie passes me one of my more robust nephews so she can hold the new addition, and Savannah snuggles herself up under my free arm, watching as Maisie takes the baby and sits on the chair beside Leia’s bed.

“I can’t believe you had no drugs.” She sounds impressed as she presses her finger on his little button nose.

“I didn’t have any time,” Leia points out, looking traumatized.

“You shoulda seen it, he came out like a bull from the shoot,” Wade tells us excitedly as he kisses the top of her head. The door opens and when Garrett steps in, he heads straight over to hug Wade.

“Mr. Mayor, meet your nephew.” Maisie turns the bundle in her arms so he can get a better look at him.

“Well done, darlin’.” He reaches over the bed and kisses Leia before taking his nephew out of Maisie’s arms and gettin’ a proper look at him.

“So now we’re all here, you gonna tell us his name?” Maisie reaches into the bag she’s got hanging over her stroller and gives each of the kids something from their snack bag and, instead of eating it himself, Jack tries to ram it into my mouth.

“Well.” Leia looks up at Wade and smiles brightly.

“We were thinking of Dalton… Dalton Carson,” Wade reveals and it puts a lump in my throat and a tear in Garrett’s eyes.

“What d’ya think?” Leia asks.

“I think it’s perfect.” Garrett smiles down and looks almost as proud as Wade is.

“I haven’t spoken to Mitch about it yet, so it’s ain’t official but…”

“Mitch’ll love it,” I assure Wade.

“Come on, let me have a hold before Cole drops me at work.” Savannah carefully takes the tiny bundle from Garrett and sits herself on the edge of Leia’s bed.

“You have your daddy’s eyes.” She smiles at him. “Let’s hope you have your mummy’s brains to go with them,” she whispers, and as I watch her stare adoringly at him, I wonder how the hell she ended up my wife.

The girl sent me spiraling the first time I saw her dripping wet on our landing and nothing’s been the same since. Now she’s got me standing here wondering what she’d look like with a baby of her own in her arms.

We both eventually have to say our goodbyes and leave so I can get her to work at the guesthouse on time.

“Leia’s amazing, isn’t she?” Savannah shakes her head in amazement as I drive her back toward town.

“Yeah, she did good.”

“And Fiona, she had her baby at home last week. She was downstairs helping with the breakfasts a day later,” she tells me, sounding in awe of them both.

“Women are made of strong stuff, that's why they’re the ones who have the babies,” I point out, and it makes her laugh that sweet little laugh that makes me fall more in love with her every time I hear it.

She rests back and stares out the window and as I continue to drive, her smile starts to fade. I can’t help wonderin’ what’s goin’ through her head.

“What you thinkin’ ‘bout, darlin’?” I reach across and squeeze her thigh.

“Nothin’ really.” She shakes her head.

“Sure ya are, you got that look you always make when you’re contemplatin’ somethin’,” I point out.
