When she met us, the look of horror on her face at realizing who we are after the night we spent together would have been comical if it weren’t so fucking heart wrenching. It wasn’t just the horror; it was the regret you could clearly read all over her face. I hated the thought of her regretting the time we spent together.

That was the only reason we allowed her to have a little space. We knew it was going to be a surprise when she met us. We knew she was going to have some questions. She’s probably thinking the worst of us, and she wouldn’t be wrong, but at the same time we don’t want her to feel that way about us.

She needed to have some time to process. I can’t say I blame her either. It was clear from the look on her face when she ‘met’ us that she was going to pull a runner if we didn’t give her the space and time she needed. After waiting for years to finally meet her, we’re very aware of how effective of a runner she is.

It’s not like we won’t get the chance to be around her. What was a few more days considering the night we spent together?

At least, that’s what I’ve been trying to convince myself for the last few days because it’s hard as hell to stay away from her. Thankfully, I’ve been able to keep myself relatively busy with work.

The market is hot right now and I’ve been able to utilize Jordan’s skills as an agent to make some good headway on selling some homes. I think Lachlan has had it the worst since he’s spent most of the last few days in the office.

Considering how tense he’s been when he’s come home at night, I’m sure he’s been fighting himself about seeing our woman. He’s not one to wait around and being patient must be killing him.

We got to our dad and Abigail’s house early for family dinner tonight. I saw the face Lennon made when Albert reminded her about it. I have no doubt Abigail had already told her all about it the moment she got back to town.

I saw how disappointed Abigail was when Lennon moved to town and then immediately left before she had a chance to introduce her daughter to us or have a family dinner. Tonight is something Abigail has been looking forward to for a long time. I hope it goes well.

When the doorbell rings, my brothers and I tense, but then quickly relax. Dad and Abigail, who is practically vibrating in excitement as she finishes cooking dinner, share a look and a smile without taking notice of us at all. Good.

Abigail claps her hands together, “Finally. I was a little worried she was going to find another excuse to not show up.”

She hustles out of the kitchen and Dad chuckles and shakes his head. The soft smile on his face as he watches Abigail leave the room makes my chest feel tight. He deserves his happiness with his wife and I’m glad as hell that he found her.

Our mom left us not long after Jordan was born. Dad was still building his business and didn’t have anywhere near the prestige or money he has now. I have no idea how he managed to build his business and raise the three of us, but he did it without complaint and without making us feel like we were less important than the business.

I don’t think the man dated for years. If he did, we never knew about it, and he was always present for us whenever we needed him. He was at almost every game we played or award ceremony we had. It was rare for him not to be able to show up. Thankfully, his parents are in Phoenix and were a huge part of our lives growing up.

They gave us the support we needed and helped us to become more well-rounded, especially because we didn’t have a mother figure in our lives except for our grandma. There were times when we missed our mom, but she made her choices, and we made peace with them a long time ago.

When dad found Abigail, we were thrilled for him and seeing them together makes us happy. He put all his energy into the business and his kids. He earned his happiness, and I can’t wait until he retires because then he will be living his best life.

Knowing he trusts us with his business makes me proud as fuck. I hope Lennon knows she’s included in that. If she doesn’t know it yet, she will.

I could see the pride on dad’s face the morning he introduced Lennon around the executive floor and finished up her tour of the business. And that feeling wasn’t just about showing off what he built—it was about her finally being here and being part of the future of Winston Realty.

“I’m so excited for you to be here,” Abigail gushes as she leads Lennon back into the kitchen.

It’s a huge space with a large dining area and an open floor plan. Dad was always big on family dinner and this kitchen allowed us to do homework around the table while he cooked or gave us enough room to help.

He always told us, “You need to learn how to cook for yourself. You can’t expect a woman to take care of you. You should be able to feed yourself or your partner, when the time comes for you to have one.”

I thought for a long time that he was talking about how mom left him, and us, but I realized he was just trying to give us an important life skill. I should have realized it sooner since he was never bitter about mom leaving. He simply accepted it and adapted.

Dad rounds the kitchen island and heads straight for Lennon to pull her into a hug. “It’s wonderful to finally have you here,” there’s nothing snarky about his tone. Even though he’s not trying to, I can see the guilt written across Lennon’s face when she glances at me before looking away. “Abigail has been practically floating around all day while cleaning everything,” dad pokes a little fun at his wife.

Abigail slaps his chest jokingly while hissing, “Don’t tell her that.”

Dad shrugs like it’s no big deal. “What? You have been. I thought you were going to wear down the countertop to nothing with how many times you wiped it down.”

Abigail rolls her eyes before focusing on Lennon, her face going soft and her eyes filling with love as she looks at her daughter. “I am happy you’re here. This has been a long time coming. I’m so glad you moved here.”

Lennon takes a deep breath before letting it out slowly. “I’m glad too,” she offers her mom with a soft smile on her face. She glances at the three of us so fast I don’t get nearly enough time to look into her gorgeous brown eyes. We know she’s been avoiding us, but she won’t be able to tonight. “Hi, nice to see you again,” there’s a professional quality to her voice.

I much prefer the way she moaned and asked us for more the night of the key party. I barely fight the impulse to pull her away from dad and into my arms. It’s clear how nervous she is. It’s wafting off her along with a little frustration and regret.

I don’t like it one bit.

As Lennon shifts from one foot to the other, it’s Jordan who takes pity on her. He gives her a charming smile. “We’re so glad you’re here, Lennon,” his voice is warm and inviting. His charm is what makes him good at his job because it’s not fake. “Sorry I haven’t been able to check on you the last few days in the office, I’ve had a lot of showings. Hopefully, you’re settling in okay.”
