Malice and Fury quickly left as Caleb carried me to the idling truck. Once inside, his arms tightened around me as Montana sat behind the wheel, putting the vehicle in drive.

“I’m so sorry,” I muttered again.

I didn’t know why I kept saying it, but it felt right. Maybe if I said it enough, he would believe me. There was so much I needed to atone for. So many people I needed to beg for forgiveness.

“We can talk later, Largo. You’re safe. That’s all you need to worry about.”

I knew what that meant.

He wanted me to say nothing. It was a code he’d drilled into me from the start. He rarely called me by my name. It was alwaysbabe, baby, orsweetheart. However, when something had to do with club business, he made damn sure I kept my mouth shut by using my given name. I knew to observe and keep my ears open.

He did it to protect me.

I knew that.

Montana huffed, concentrating on the road while the windshield wipers wiped furiously across the windshield. The rain was coming down in sheets. I hadn’t seen it rain like that in a while. The weather seemed calm before I left the hospital. I should have known that a storm was brewing. I felt it earlier when I was at the harbor. Now it looked as if the heavens had opened the floodgates with no end in sight.

I didn’t know if it was a sign of what was to come, but the dark clouds looming overhead certainly added an ominous touch. Suddenly, the stillness was shattered by a thunderous clap, its echoes bouncing off the nearby buildings and distorting its true volume.

“Jesus,” Montana growled. “It’s really coming down. How is she doing, Mercy?”

“She’s soaked through. Turn up the heat.”

The concern he showed for my well-being was something I truly appreciated and was grateful for. Too bad I didn’t deserve any of it. What I deserved was... well, he would decide that when the time came, and my time was fading fast. Because I knew when I stepped foot on Soulless Sinners’ sacred ground, there was no way Mercy was ever going to let me go again.

I’d put off the inevitable long enough.

Sometimes I wondered if he knew all along. That I never wanted a divorce. That I silently prayed he would figure it all out and make it all go away.

But he never did, and, in the end, I had to let him go.

It was the only way.

Now it was time to pay the piper.

I just prayed the piper played along.

Chapter Five

Mercy

“Mercy, if you don’t back the fuck up and let me do my job, I will make you leave.”

“Try it,” I dared the motherfucker. There was no fucking way in hell she was leaving my damn sight again. Not after I just got her back. If Bane thought he could move me, then he could try, but he would fucking lose.

After three damn long years, I had my woman again and no one was going to take her from me. Seeing her huddled against that dumpster, soaked to the bone, scared shitless, did something to my soul. I wanted to kill the motherfucker who dared frighten her. I wanted to find the bastard who forced her to divorce me and rip that motherfucker to death with my bare hands. I wanted that person to feel the pain, the anguish, the resentment, the fury, the gut-wrenching sorrow they’d put me through over the last three motherfucking years. By the time I was done with the son of a bitch, they were going to wish they were never born, let alone fucked with my fucking life.

And I planned on doing just that as soon as she told me who it was.

There was so much we needed to discuss, and I planned on having that conversation as soon as she was able, but right now, I needed to make sure she was okay. She was still shivering, and from what I could see, she’d lost a lot of weight, but I was more concerned with the fading bruises and scrapes on her body. They covered her from head to toe. Her beautiful, perfect body had been through some kind of trauma, and I wanted to know exactly what had happened.

And I need Bane to tell me what that was.

“Where is Sophia?” Her voice shook as she gripped my hand tightly, gaining my attention. Reaching for the chair next to her, I sat, covering her hand with mine. “She’s a good baby. She’s spending the weekend with my parents. They are spoiling her rotten.”

Largo slowly turned towards me. Her hands trembling.

“She’s not at the penthouse? Who else is with her?”
