Page 16 of Sinner's Mercy

Montana pushed off the wall, standing straight as he looked at me. Bane stopped what he was doing, staring at Largo, listening attentively. It was clear she was worried, scared even. Looking from Bane to Montana, I slowly turned back to Largo and questioned, “What do you mean?”

“Which brother?” she demanded to know, gripping my cut. Concern etched all over her face.

She wasn’t playing around.

Whatever was going on, Largo feared for our daughter.

Montana growled, “Largo, what the fuck is going on?”

Holding up my hand to stop whatever he was about to say, I queried, “Why would a brother need to be with her? She’s with my parents.”

Largo shook her head. Her eyes were wild with panic as she pleaded, “Please, Caleb. Send a brother to watch over her. Send Malice. Malice needs to be with her. Please.”

“Alright, babe,” I uttered, turning to look at Montana.

He nodded, leaving the room.

“Montana will take care of it.”

The second I said the words, she relaxed and laid back down, allowing Bane to do whatever else he needed to do. While her anxiety eased a bit, I could clearly see fear gripping hertightly. Whatever was going on was big enough to scare one of the strongest women I knew. Nothing generally ever got Largo upset. Typically, she took everything with a grain of salt, but this... whatever this was, worried me.

“Largo,” Bane softly spoke, walking over to her with a syringe in his hand. “Your blood pressure is all over the place. I would like to give you something to help calm you down. Will you allow me to do that?”

Largo frantically shook her head, reaching for my hand. “Please, Caleb. Don’t let him.”

“Baby, I don’t know what else to do. Bane’s right. You are panicking and none of us know why. You’re not telling us anything and now you want Malice to watch over Sophia? Baby, you have to give me something here, anything.”

“The past is coming.”

I frowned as I looked at Bane.

When Largo said nothing more, I nodded to my brother, who took her IV tube in his hand, then inserted the sedative, slowly pushing the plunger. Holding onto her hand, I watched as her eyes played out every fear she felt.

She was breaking my heart all over again and didn’t know it.

“Mercy, we need to talk,” Montana said from the doorway. “Now.”

Nodding, I got up from the chair, leaned over and lightly kissed her forehead. “Sleep, baby. I will take care of everything. I promise.”

Following Montana towards the boardroom, I said nothing, nor was I surprised when I walked in to find the board members all waiting. Taking my seat, I waited for the other shoe to drop.

I wasn’t stupid.

I knew how this shit was going to go. I’d been a member of this club since my early twenties when my construction firm got the bid to refurbish city hall. It was a big deal forsomeone as young as me. Put Davenport Architecture, Design & Construction on the map. Now, as one of the leading architectural firms in the city, my time was in high demand. It also solidified my entry into the Soulless Sinners MC.

The old Prez, George Stone, recruited me himself. Mentored me as I became a prospect, then a patched member. He was also the one who placed the branding iron on my back when I became a board member and was standing beside me when Montana asked me to be his VP. Through it all, George Stone helped me, guided me, molded me into the Sinner I was today.

And because of him, I knew exactly what the club was going to do next. So, it shocked me when he and the other Retirement Rejects walked into the boardroom, shutting the door behind them, stilling the sounds of hushed conversations.

What the fuck were they doing here?

“Everyone, shut the fuck up,” Montana declared, taking his seat.

“Why is the old guard here?”

“They are here for Largo.”

“Why?”
