“Something else is going on here, Montana. I feel it in my bones. Largo was telling us the truth in the mailroom. Maybe not the whole truth, but she wasn’t lying.”

“Well, she left something out, and until she wakes up and we can question her again, we can’t do anything. I’ve already posted two brothers on her door at all times. Woman won’t be able to piss without you or I knowing about it. When she’s well enough to be released, we will confine her to the clubhouse until we clear up this mess.”

“You mean the same clubhouse where that fucknut attacked her?” I sneered.

“It’s that or the safe house in Brooklyn, and trust me, Mercy, Largo will fucking hate it there.”

“Caleb?”

Before I could fully open my eyes, he was there, holding my hand. “I’m here, baby.”

“Where am I?”

“St. John’s Presbyterian Hospital,” the familiar voice said. “Largo, do you remember who I am?”

Barely opening my eyes, I moaned, closing them again. “Hi, Tess.”

“Hi, sweetie,” my friend said happily. “How are you feeling?”

“Like someone beat the hell out of me.”

Caleb growled.

I smirked. “Too soon?”

“Way too soon.”

Montana stepped up behind Tess, wrapping his arms around her waist, frowning. “Largo, can you explain to me why I have a dead body in my clubhouse? More importantly, who the fucker is and why he was trying to kill you?”

I couldn’t deal with all the seriousness in the room. Someone just beat the hell out of me and I felt like shit. My back still hurt like a motherfucker and I desperately needed a pain pill. Trying to lighten the mood, I retorted, “Because of my stellar personality?”

Both men growled as Tessa chuckled. “God, I missed you.”

“Look, all I know was that I was being followed the second I left the hospital. I felt them more than I saw them. After what happened to my family, forgive me if I didn’t wait around for a cordial chat. I just wanted to get the hell away from that place.”

“And you have no idea who they were?”

“I’m assuming they were the ones who killed my parents and brother.”

“And what about the fucker in our bedroom?” Caleb asked.

“Oh, he was really chatty. Said he was going to gut me, then tried to beat my organs out of me, but he did say his boss sends his regards. If that was how his boss introduces himself, I really don’t want to meet him. Wasn’t there any identification on the guy?”

“No,” both men groaned.

“Largo, Shame couldn’t find—”

“Let it go, Montana,” Caleb clipped, cutting him off. “Not right now. She’s been through enough tonight. You can grill her tomorrow.”

Montana said nothing more as he and Tessa left the room.

Turning to look at Caleb, I could see the worry etched on his face.

Something more had happened.

Something he wasn’t ready to talk about.

I hated this. I hated putting him in this position. Having to choose between me and his brothers. Mainly because when it came down to it, I wasn’t entirely sure he would choose me.
