Not after what I’d done.

“You ever going to forgive me for leaving you?”

“It’s not about forgiving you, Largo. It’s about living with forgiving you, and I’m not sure I know how to do that.”

“What do you want to do, then?”

“I don’t know. I just need some time.”

“Caleb, I don’t have time. If you haven’t noticed, there is someone out there trying to kill me and I don’t know why. Maybe I shouldn’t have come home. Maybe I should have kept running.”

“Maybe you should have.”

Chapter Eleven

Mercy

A month later,

“Dad?”

“Yeah,” I muttered, scanning the New York Times I was reading. Well, trying to read. Lately, I haven’t been able to concentrate on anything. Not work, not the club, not even my daughter who sat next to me eating her breakfast.

“When is Mom coming home?”

“Soon.”

“You said that three weeks ago.”

“Mom needs to stay at the clubhouse for a while, sweetie.”

“Why?”

“Because she’s helping the club with something.”

It wasn’t technically a lie. She was helping Shame and Pippen while answering all the questions Montana kept throwing at her. The club still didn’t know who the hell was after her or who erased her entire identity. Then there was the fact that I didn’t want my daughter embroiled in this mess, and until Largo was free and clear of whatever was going on, I refused to let her anywhere near our daughter.

So, until the club cleared up the situation or I didn’t feel like throttling her ass every time I saw her, she was staying at the clubhouse under guard.

Everyone was safer that way.

My wife may not like it, but I didn’t give a fuck. There was no fucking way in hell anything was spilling over to my daughter.

“I drew Mom another picture. Will you give it to her?”

“Um hmm. I promise I will.”

“Dad?”

“Yeah, baby?”

“Do you still love Mom?”

Lowering the paper, I looked at my daughter. “Why are you asking that?”

“Because you don’t talk about her. When I bring her up, you barely say anything.”

Sighing, I folded the paper, placing it next to my untouched plate. “Baby, I do love your mom. I never stopped loving her, but your mom messed up. Now that she’s back, it’s going to take some time to figure out where we go from here.”
