Because when he realized I lied to him, his usual tolerance of my flippant behavior was obliterated by real anger. An anger I’d only ever seen a handful of times and that was enough to instill the fear of God in me.

How could I have been so stupid?

Of course! That’s why he was avoiding me.

He wasn’t indifferent to me.

He was fucking pissed.

Pissed because I’d lied to him.

“Not just lied, Largo. You didn’t trust him.”

Fuck. Did I say that out loud?

“The longer you make him wait, the angrier he will get.”

Turning, I spotted Montana and the rest of the brothers heading for the entrance of the clubhouse.

That’s when I realized that the clubhouse was quiet.

Too damn quiet.

Putting his jacket on, Montana added, “He’s been stewing for three damn years, woman. Did you honestly think because you divorced him that he’d walk away from his vow to you? Because if you did, you really don’t know the man you married.”

Gulping, I muttered, “I didn’t think...”

“And that right there is the problem.” Payne shook his head as Malice and Silver walked out of the kitchen, each dressed to ride. “You didn’t think, Largo. Now, it’s time to pay the piper. He’s waited long enough, and you’re healed. You of all people understand the dynamics of a BDSM relationship. Your husband never turns it off. I’d wish you good luck, but even I know you deserve everything you are about to get.”

“You may have paid your penance to the club, Largo, but your husband is another story. We want our brother back, so be a good girl. Take your punishment,” Montana said flatly when Silver snuggled close to him, zipping up her coat. “Everything locked up?”

“Yep,” Silver confirmed happily.

“Good,” Montana muttered, turning for the door. “Don’t keep him waiting, Largo.”

The second the doors closed behind them, my heart started beating frantically in my chest. A chill washed over my bodywhile I shivered, standing there as silence rained around me when I felt eyes on me.

Turning around, I saw a large figure standing near the bar, glaring at me.

I knew that shape intimately, recalling the cold rage on his face the day I walked out of the courtroom after the judge declared us divorced. The fury he bottled up that day was palpable. For three years, I’d lived on borrowed time. Subconsciously, I knew I fucked up when I ran away. I managed to make one of the most caring and loving men I knew furious, and over the last three years, he consolidated his rage into something far more dangerous. I couldn’t hold back the desperate little yelp when I dropped to my knees, eyes down, hands resting on my open thighs.

“Well, at least you still have some manners left,” he sneered before moving a couple of steps further into the room.

“Bane medically cleared you?”

It wasn’t a statement.

It was a question.

Caleb never repeated the question. I knew he wouldn’t. He knew I heard him clearly. The problem was I didn’t know how to answer him. Oh, I knew what I wanted to say, but adding another lie on top of the one I already told would only prolong my punishment.

Silence.

Dead. Silence.

When he continued to stand there, I dared not look up because if I knew one thing about the man I married, it was that he was only getting started. Because whatever he had planned for me, I was going to need all my strength to get through it.

“On your stomach, Largo.”
