Travis scratches his beard, biting back his need to kill me. I can see it in his eyes. “Motherfucker.” He stands. “I’ll go. Poverty or not, I’ll carry every damn one of those people out of there.”

Sadness swallows me, a gaping hole drawing me in. He can’t go. “No. I’ll do it,” I tell them again.

“You have a fucking family waiting for you, dickhead.” Travis turns, striding away. I feel my panic rising like a tidal wave.

I catch up to him, yanking his arm, pulling his back to me. I’m unable to stop the words from pushing past my lips. “So do you,” I say quietly so only he can hear.

Travis freezes. Silence. I’m a dickhead. Aselfishdickhead. “She isn’t my family.” He turns as he speaks.

“No, but her son might be.”

Drunk on rage, he grabs for my cut, pulling me into him. “What the fuck are you talking about?” he spits.

“She has ason, Travis. Looks just like you.” I swear I see tears cloud his vision as I whisper his truth.

“That’s not possible.” He shoves me back, turning again, this time making it to the door.

“It’s too late!” Legs shouts halting Travis. All heads turn to Legs. “I already put my name down.”

What the actual fuck? “Kid, I swear to God...”

“No point arguing, Prez. I fit the bill. My name’s on that list.”

“They’ll know you’re a Ripper.”

He shakes his head. “I never went on that run, and I was watching Mads when Costa came here. He and his men never saw me.”

“Fuck,” Travis sighs before taking heavy steps towards Legs. He jabs his finger into Legs’ chest. “No fucking way you’re patching in now.” He then makes his way up the stairs, the weight of what I just told him, suffocating.

“Two days, I need to be on the dark web. I have a friend who can help me. She’s good with this stuff.”

She?

“She can hack the system and you can follow me.”

I sigh, so completely lost in the storm. “We need to get everyone to the table. Work this out properly. You,” I look at Legs, “don’t give me another reason to kill you.”

Sheepishly, he nods and begins following the guys as the door opens.

Red and Talia arrive to start their shift.

I bump into the back of Jack stood motionless; his eyes fixed on the Red devil stood by the door. I look between them.

She definitely blushes, then dips her head, shy.

Oh, no fucking way that’s happening. I push him, making him miss a step and knock into Legs.

“What’s this?” Red shouts, making Jack turn way tooenthusiastically back to look at whatever she’s holding.

“That’s mine.” Legs takes two stairs at a time down to her.

Every bone in my body shakes. My insides flip. Hot heat swims from my toes to the back of my neck. I pat down my pockets. Lauren’s key, no longer there. “What do you mean that’s yours?”

He runs back to the bottom of the stairs. “My key. Been missing since…” He looks up, seeing his life flash before his eyes.
