“And you’ll call me when you get there?” Dean’s hands knead my bum, working their way up my back.

With my arms around his neck, I stand on my tiptoes, my lips pushing to his. “Yes. And you’ll have your phone if Lauren needs you?”

“Yes. She’s with friends until Friday, then she’ll be back.” Another squeeze.

“That’s right.” I kiss him.

“Come on,” Jess shouts from her car.

“Don’t miss me too much,” I tell him.

He cups my face, my feet falling to the ground. “I’ll only miss you when I’m breathing.”

He studies me, and I get the horrid feeling he’s memorising every inch of me. Worry flashes across his face, the line on his forehead, telling. “Dean.” His eyes wander to mine. “Everything, okay?”

“Yeah,” he sighs, his body tightening.

“I trust you, VP.”

He pulls me closer, cradling my head to his chest. I feel him relax a little as Jess beeps the car horn. He kisses my head. “I’ll see you soon.”

“Be safe.” When I look in his eyes, my heart suddenly stammers. It’s like he knows danger’s waiting for him. My bottom lip wobbles when I see the first night he helped me to my feet. The way he dragged his eyes over me. How I lost my breath when he lifted me onto his bike. I smile, but it fades. “Promise me,” I quickly add.

“You have my word.” He walks me to the car, then opens the door for me to climb in. “We’re almost there.”

“I love you.” I smile.

He closes the door, and both Jess and I watch him walk away. “Everything go okay in there?”

Putting my seatbelt on, Jess starts the engine. “Usual. I’ve got to take it easy. Baby hasn’t grown much in the last two weeks. I have to go back on Monday.”

Jess places her hand on my knee. “It’ll be okay.”

I squeeze her hand before she places it back on the wheel. “I know.”

What I don’t know is whether Dean’s worried for me, or for what he’s got going on with the club. I shake my head. Who am I kidding. He’ll be worrying about everything.

Not acknowledging the fact my heart already aches to be near him, I turn to Jess in my seat. “How’s Max?”

“Better,” Jess says. “He’s going to change his job, maybe take some more time off before he decides what he’s going to do.”

“That’s good.”

Jess humphs. “Yeah. Would be better if he could hurry up and decide though. I feel like I’ve been a single parent for the past few months.”

I look out the front window before I look back at Jess. “Maybe once we get back, you two should get away for a bit? Just the two of you. I’ll watch Axl.”

She smiles. “You’d do that?”

“Of course. Makes sense to get away before the baby comesand I have no free time.”

Jess laughs. “Zero free time. You can kiss goodbye to tight skin and bladder control as well.”

“Sounds—”

“—then of course, there’s the leaky boobs, hair loss, crying for no reason. Weight gain. Low sex drive.” Her dropped face says it all as she looks at me. “Sorry.”

I laugh. “I hadn’t thought about all the other stuff to be honest.” My minds drifts.
