Approaching where my men are a few minutes later, the sense of something out of place is immediate. The air surrounding me is heavy. I steady my breathing, treading lightly, watching my footing as I make my way closer.

My men should be here. Where the fuck are they?

I crouch near the small monitor set up. There’s blood spattered on the screen, and my guy’s weapon left on the ground. An ambush. This was hurried.

I pick up one of their earpieces, crumpled on the floor. Please fuckin’ work. The sound of Dean talking comes through. I open up my feed to him. He’s on his knees.Shit.

I go to stand as the sound of snapping bark comes frombehind. I duck. But not quick enough. A heavy boot ricochets off the side of my head, forcing me to spin, my head knocking against the cold, hard ground. Brain rattling, I drag my eyes to the man lifting his foot to strike me again.

If I don’t move now, Deano will be in danger. The man I need to kill will get away.

Forcing my heavy body to roll, I avoid his heel, reaching for my gun at the same time. I fight the black darkness descending in front of me, aiming my gun at the man stood over me.

His gun is already trained at my head.

Closure. Peace. Revenge.

It was almost mine.

Chapter Forty-Six

DEAN

We pull up at the drop off just over an hour after leaving the farm. I lead the lorry into the dimly lit car park near the dock. No doubt Costa has this place locked down. We’re out of sight, but there’s a small lane running adjacent to the tree line sheltering us. It’s the only way in and out of here by land.

With Travis by my side, we start towards the armed men stood by the boat. There’s ten of them that I can count. Vincent follows close behind with Billy and his VP, whilst the rest of my men stay by the bikes. “Were they this armed last time?” I whisper, my lips hardly moving.

“No,” Travis replies, doing the same.

We come to a stop. My heart races, and I take a subtle, steadying breath.

“Gentlemen.” Costa looks between us, his hands in his trouser pockets. He signals to the men stood behind him, and they walk to us, disarming all of us of the weapons we're carrying, including my knife.

“What is this?” Travis asks him.

Costa’s eyes are grey. His face creased with lines of annoyance. We made him wait. He’s suspicious. Only natural given the contents of the crates.

Three men walk from behind us carrying heavy bags. Presumably, they’re the rest of the weapons my men were carrying.

“Getting shot. A breakdown.” He peers over my shoulder. Is he checking if Billy’s on his bike? “Maybe next time we try to avoid any hiccups.” One of his brows lifts.

Travis folds his arms. “Hiccups or not, your shipment always gets here,” he says bullishly.

The corner of Costa’s mouth twitches, and I swallow. Hard. “That’s why I put you on point.” He takes his hand from his pocket, clicking his fingers. “Ignore me taking weapons. It’s just a precaution.”

Another man steps closer. I don’t instantly recognise him. He looks up, his eyes fixating on mine as he talks to Costa. He reminds me of the officer from the custody station a couple of months ago. You’d think he knew me the way he stares.

Before I can get a better look, he turns his head as he speaks, his mouth dipped to Costa’s ear so only he can hear what’s being said.

Taking a sharp breath, I watch him walk away, making a call. Travis said they didn’t check the crates last time; they counted them and that was that. So, when men start walking forward, I step aside letting them past, my eyes flicking to the man who walked away, before I follow.

“Who’s that?” I ask Travis hushed, nodding in the man’s direction.

I beg my eyes not to look for a hidden Jack and his team as Travis discreetly looks over his shoulder. “Costa’s right-hand. Guy’s a cunt.”

I look back quickly when an unexpected shuffle comes from the back of the lorry. I reach for my smokes, busying myself.No. Oh fuck no. I dart my frantic eyes to Travis, wondering if he heard it. He doesn’t react. Maybe he didn’t. Beats and Billy on the otherhand, their eyes are wide. Being the two stood closest to the lorry, they’re definitely thinking along the same lines as me. If those pigs wake up anytime soon, this place will be a blood bath.

Another rustle.
