“It was fine. I didn’t really get into it with her,” she said. “That’ll just be an uncomfortable experience. But I did ask her if she had anything to do with the changes with my mother, and it seemed so.” Looking at Rick, she threw a casual shrug. “I thanked her, but that was it.”

“Did you ask her anything else?” Alex prodded.

“Not really,” she answered. “Do you have questions for her?”

“Me?” Alex pointed to himself, then scoffed. “Nope. Just wondering what you two were talking about.”

“Nothing you would be interested in,” she said. “Trust me.”

Visibly irritable, Alex rolled his eyes and threw his arms out. “Fine, whatever. I don’t care. I gotta go. Took a break to come here, and now I’m gonna head back.” He didn’t wait for a response before rushing to his car parked across the lot.

“See you in a few days!” Charlie called, and Alex waved an arm up without looking back. Chuckling, she faced Rick, who stood mute, and wrapped around his waist.

“You really didn’t talk about anything?” Rick couldn’t hold back his curiosity.

“I didn’t askwhy,” she said, the context already understood between them. “I didn’t think I wanted to hear it. I told her not to expect anything from you, though. And she understood. Maybe something will come out of it later on, but not now.”

He nodded. It was the best they could come up with. Sliding an arm around her back, he dragged her to him. “What else?”

Her lashes lowered, and she pulled her arms from his midsection to curl around his neck. “Well, she seems to approve of us. Said she knew I’d take good care of you.”

“Really.” Rick swayed them to the side. “Are you going to take care of me?”

She looked insulted. “Do you even have to ask? Richard Min, you are the most important thing in my life right now. I’ll show you how loved you are that you won’t dare question me again.”

His smile was instant. “I love you, Charlotte. I’d give up all the riches for you.”

Lost and blinking, she stared at him in confusion. “Isn’t that supposed to be my line? You don’t have any riches.”

He laughed. “That was a bad joke. I have nothing worth a damn to give you, Charlie, but I’ll spend the rest of my life proving to youI’mworth a damn.”

“Richard, you’re an idiot,” she chided. “How dare you say you don’t have anything worthy? You’reenough, my love.” With the most gentle touch, she brushed her hand over his jawline. “You’ve always been more than enough. I’ll love you more than anyone ever could.”

That was when he knew life was only going to go up from here.
