With feline speed, he ducked down and my arm soared right over his head.

I twirled, chest heaving, attacking again. This time, I landed the shield against his chest. With a mighty yell, I shoved with all my might.

Von didn’t budge this time.

In one swift, degrading move, he tugged it from my arm and threw it to the side like I was a child and he was the adult taking the annoying toy away. His predator gaze locked with mine. “Now what will you do,Kitten?”

He did not get to call me a pet name—not when he was probably callingherthat as well.

A feral growl came out as my reply. I raced for the shield, my heart pounding. It felt like the hounds of the Spirit Realm were snapping at my heels.

Von’s arm cinched around my waist, pulling me against him. I reared my leg back, hoping to connect with his shin, but my leg sailed right between his. Like a bear trap, his legs sprung closed, locking mine between his.

Despite the difference in our heights, like this, our bodies fit rather nicely. Where my soft curves ended, his hard edges began, as if they were meant to be like this.

That was when it hit me. Dead center.

Whether I liked it or not, I was attracted to him.

Worse—I had feelings for the bastard.

And the thought of him and that woman?

“I’m done.”

He let me go, his retracted warmth leaving me cold.

I didn’t bother to look back as I walked towards the back door and let myself inside. When I reached the hallway, bootheels thundered behind me, his long, powerful legs chewing up the distance between us.

He caught my arm and twirled me towards him, his face inches over mine. “You have barely spoken to me the past two weeks,” he growled.

“When have I been given the chance to speak with you? You brood during the day and are nowhere to be found during the night,” I fired back like an overheated teapot, my frustration well beyond its boiling point.

“I have been busy,” he grated.

That was it? No explanation. Nothing?

“You are unbelievable,” I seethed, tugging my arm out of his grasp. I took a much-needed step back. I gargled a thought before I spat it out. “Isthatwoman what is keeping you so busy?”

Something akin to amusement flickered in his eyes. “She is part of it, yes.”

There it was—the truth. And I had no idea what to do with it. I took another self-protecting step back. I didn’t need to know the details about them. I didn’t want to.

“Oh, I see.” My voice failed me—I hated the crack in it. Despised it.

“Don’t do that.” He stepped towards me.

“Do what?”

“Assume you know,” he replied as if it were some horrible crime I committed repeatedly.

“I’ll tell you what I know. While you have been shamelessly flirting with me, you spend your nights with her. Do you call her kitten too?”

I was venomous. Goddess divine, wherewas this coming from?

“Oh, my territorial, little creature. As much as I enjoy seeing you like this, you have it so very wrong,” he purred, the flicker across those midnight eyes suggesting he was tempted to laugh.

I crossed my arms. “Then explain it to me.”
