Look up,a feminine voice whispered inside me.

I did—towards the clear, azure sky, dolloped with cottony white clouds leisurely floating by. My gaze landed on a large, black feather—it was floating towards me, shifting from side to side as it lowered down, down, down.

Instinctively, I extended my arm and faced my palm upwards.

When the silky plume settled into my hand, Von’s bourbon tone poured into my ears.Have you forgotten who you belong to?

A breath of wind swept it from my hands, taking it from me—snatching it back.

“Well, have you?” asked a deep, dark voice—steeped in anger.

My head jerked up, my eyes rounding at the corners.

Von’s phantom leaned against the railing, just to my left, his ringed fingers twirling the quill. He wore his hair up, tucked into a braid that fell down his back, exposing the one side that was shaven. As always, his masculine, muscular form was wrappedin black leather. And as always, heownedthe look.Damn the bastard.

“You’re not here,” I said, backing up a few paces, hoping it would bring my swirling mind clarity. This was the male that had stolen my ability to create, who’d actively hunted me, who’d made me sick with fever.

I hated him.

I hated him.

And yet . . . how badly I wanted to hear him whisper his pretty little lies in my ear.

I was a stupid, stupid girl.

“No?” he challenged, tossing the feather over his shoulder. The wind swept it away, carrying it off into the horizon, until I could no longer see it anymore. I had thought that the feathers had some sort of meaning, but now I was beginning to question that too.

Von’s gaze drifted to the spot—to the evidence of my joining with Aurelius. His nostrils flared and his onyx eyes darted towards my thighs, undoubtedly seeing right past the fabric. I dropped my hands in front, as if that were enough to block his vision.

I doubted it was.

Damn him.

Again.

His eyes snapped to mine, and he bared his teeth—growlingat me. The growl was unlike anything I had ever heard before, there was nothing human about it. Like a bolt of lightning, he struck. He wrapped his massive hand around the base of my neck as he reared me back against the stone wall, athumpsounding upon impact. His body crushed mine as he pinned me there, snarling like some deranged beast. His rings sunk into my sensitive skin like biting teeth, his grip firm, but not enough to sever my air.

I wheezed, “Von, what are you—”

His eyes were so black, so bottomless, I froze.

“Once again, you have proven yourself to have terrible taste in men,” he sneered, furiously.

Him. Furious.With me?

He had no right.

“You know nothing,” I hissed, throwing the words at him like a hand striking a cheek. He deserved so much worse from me.

He blew out a disbelieving laugh. “I know that I wouldneverneed to sway you with my ichor to fuck me. What part ofstay away from himdidn’t you understand?”

“What?” My tongue stumbled over the word—howdid he know?

“I can smell him on you,” he answered, his thumb and forefinger roughly snatching my chin, forcing me to look at him. “Inyou.” He forced my face to the side, the action far from gentle. He lowered his face to my neck, his upper torso curving to make up for the vast difference in our heights. “I should drain every vein in your body, riphisscent from you, and replace it withmine.” Heated breath feathered across my neck as his teeth scraped over the sensitive flesh. “You shouldonlyever smell of me.”

And just when I was certain his teeth were about to pierce my flesh, he placed a sinister, gentle kiss against my neck—marking the spot as something he would return for later.

A shiver rumbled across my skin, pebbling it.
