Suddenly, he’s no longer at my neck and is instead sitting up, gently pushing my legs until I bend my knees, giving him ample room to enter me.

My breathing increases as he aligns himself with my center, and a cry of relief leaves my lips as he pushes inside.

He moves slowly and deeply, watching my expression intensely as my eyes roll in the back of my head. I never knew sex could feel thisgood. He leans down to kiss me again, a soft moan escaping his lips as he goes deeper.

I feel the familiar coil in my center tighten as he continues his movements in long, controlled strokes. He reaches one hand down between us to rub where I’m tender and the other to gain purchase on the headboard, and it’s not long after this that my orgasm overtakes me.

This must have been his goal, because after I begin to relax he sits back up, gripping my thighs as his strokes become more erratic, chasing after his own release.

I pull him closer, keeping my gaze on his face as he draws closer to the edge, and I’m surprised when I begin to feel the tension build in me for a third time.

He lets out a deep groan with his release, reverently breathing my name, his movements changing from quick and erratic to slower and deeper, and I come again.

Once we both catch our breaths, he rolls off me and onto the comforter, pulling me to his side. He plants a lazy kiss on the top of my head, gently stroking my arm. “The first time after the wait is always the most divine.”

I look up at him, brow furrowed in confusion, but then I understand. Each time I die and am born anew, he must wait for me to come around again. If I ever do. I place a kiss on his chest, directly over his heart, and lay my head down. He’ll never have to wait again.

We spend the next few hours cuddled up and chatting listlessly, never straying from surface-level topics lest we give into the horrors of what is to come. We talk about all the food and drinks he will introduce me to, about meetings with the other Elder kings that know me but also don’t. We do not mention the Society and what my betrayal means.

When I see the beginnings of daylight gleam through the balcony doors, I know it’s time to leave. To say goodbye, because we both know I will never be able to step foot within the Society’s walls once the Elders realize I am gone. I know that this could very well be the catalyst that thrusts Arman into his prophetic role.

Deep pain engulfs me as I think of Olivia. I vow to myself to ask Arman if we can find a way to help her out, as well. Find a way to bring her here so that she can finally live the life she wants. Once he agrees, I’ll give her the choice. The mere idea of Olivia being able to have the freedom that has been allotted to me holds my sadness at bay.

I voice my morning plans to him, and he understands. We exchange a few short kisses before he leads me out of our home and back toward the pathway to the Society.

We stop near the entrance of the park that we have met in so many times these past few months. Arman grips my hands in his and brings them to his lips. “Stay safe, Amelia. Say your goodbyes and come back here this evening.”

“I promise.” I lean up and kiss him deeply, and then start toward the Society barriers, anxious to see my friend one last time, at least for now.

I can’t help the smile that comes to my face as I think about the night before, about how relieving it is to forsake all the burdens that have been placed upon me since birth. I am happy to spend my life with a man I have already loved longer than my own years, but that’s not all this means. That’s not all I have to look forward to. I no longer must marry who I am told. I no longer must follow in my father’s footsteps as an official to a group of Elders I don’t share sentiments with.

I’m free.

Joy overcomes me as I look toward the sky and easily push through the barriers and walk back into the Society forest.

“Hello, Amelia.”

My eyes snap forward and my joy quickly transforms into dread.

There, standing in front of me, is the Top Elder.

And Elliot is at his side.

Chapter 19

“G

rab her.”

Before I have a chance to move, the guards are on me. I try to lunge back through the barrier, but before I can, a guard yanks my necklace off and crushes it beneath his foot. Two others grab my arms and begin dragging me past the Top Elder and I catch Elliot’s eyes.

I’ve never seen him look at me like that. There’s no other word for it but absolute disgust.

Before I can say anything, I feel a sharp pain at the base of my neck, and everything goes black.

My eyes slowly open, my head pounding. I try to raise a hand to my head, but it’s stopped short. Something is keeping my wrist in place. I blink, confused, and then everything comes back to me.
