Since Nolen had left I sat up in my sleeping bag to keep watch. It was still too early to wake everyone and it would be awhile before Nolen would be back. That I was certain.

Chapter Eight

The sun had yet to rise when I heard something in the woods. It was a wolf, the scent told me as much, but it wasn’t Nolen. I quickly pulled off my clothes and shifted to Aloysius just as the brown wolf emerged from the thick foliage. My growl echoed in the cave, waking the others behind me. The wolf in front of me instantly went to his stomach before shifting into his human form.

He was a platinum blonde man and on the smaller side as he kneeled and bowed his head before he glanced into my now blue eyes. “I’m looking for Nolen. I followed his scent to this cave.”

Olli came up beside me and placed his calming hand on my shoulders. Keeping me from lunging at the male. “Who are you, and why are you looking for this wolf?”

Olli had always been wary of people, and this wolf was no different. The man stood and glanced around our group as if looking for Nolen. “I’m from the Quartzite pack under Alpha Sawyer. My name is Trent. I hold the gamma position in the pack. I need to see Nolen right this minute.”

His urgency made me wonder if something was about to get bad. I relaxed my stance and turned my massive head to Olli. That was a name that Nolen had mentioned before when we were all talking about our pasts. Olli motioned for the wolf to come up. “He is out right now, but he will be back. Come sit.”

Turning to the group, I realized I was the only one to shift. Hannah came up and gave the gamma some shorts. While running her eyes up and down his body. I rolled my eyes. She always had to check out each naked male. I snatched up my clothes and went to the back of the cave to redress.

When I reached the group, Harley was giving the gamma his signature hateful look that he always threw my way when Hannah was sitting next to me. Plopping down beside Harley, I nudged him in the arm. Bringing his attention to me as I shook my head at him.

“Do you know when Nolen will be back? We need to leave soon. We need him at Quartzite to help with the coming battle. Alpha Wade is on his way. By the amount of wolves he’s bringing, it’s going to be bad.” His eyes were wide as he continued to glance around the cave.

“What do you mean?” I questioned the gamma.

“Alpha Wade not only has his pack, but he now has control of the Rhyolite pack. I figure that if they see Nolen, then they may switch sides. Otherwise, I think the whole of Quartzite will be demolished.” Trent’s eyes locked with mine and I could feel the pleading that was in them. He was afraid for his pack, and rightfully so.

I had trained those wolves, and had been with them since I was a boy. Unless the wolves that I had been with were gone. There was no telling if he kept them or killed them, since they were loyal to me. Once this was all over, I hoped that this Alpha Sawyer and Nolen would allow the Dolostone pack to join their packs. I was no longer alpha material.

As the sun rose over the mountains, the sound of Nolen’s paws hitting the ground came to my attention. He was on his way back from talking with the Moon Goddess. When he entered the cave, he was in his human form and naked as the day he was born.

The gamma turned and then jumped up from his seat, running up to Nolen. “I’m so glad I found you! We need to go now. The Dolostone Alpha wants to fight our pack. We need you and anyone else willing to fight.”

Nolen glanced over at our group, and from the corner of my eye, Olli nodded. We all stood from our seats and nodded to him. It looked like I would be fighting my pack members. But I would have a chance to kill my uncle and that was my main concern. I wanted revenge on that motherfucker. I wanted to feel his warm blood rush into my mouth as I tore into his throat.

“Okay, let’s go. How far are we from the pack?” Nolen’s tone changed to an alpha tone and I smirked. There was no taking an alpha from someone. You should be the one to talk, Fin. Maybe you should practice what you preach sometimes?

“A day if we don’t stop. Hopefully, the Dolostone pack hasn’t started the attack yet.” The Gamma’s voice was shaky as he turned his gaze from Nolen to the rest of us. My gamma had never been this skittish but he never had something like this riding on his shoulders with me.

“When did he say he would attack?”

“It took me a day to get here. Which was the day he threatened to attack. If we leave now, we could sneak in under darkness where the safe house is.” He was getting more confident that we would be coming along. So he would not only be bringing with him the previous alpha of Rhyolite but five others as well.

“Then we need to hurry, because I guarantee that he attacked early.” How right Nolen was about my uncle. But then again he could be stupid and not go early.

The gamma nodded, then shifted Nolen right behind him. We all followed suit, leaving everything in the cave as we took off after the gamma to make our way to the Quartzite pack.

We arrived at the back to the gamma’s pack around dark, like he had said. The smell of moon flowers permeated the air. I could hear the sounds of a battle raging and echoing against the trees. Nolen was right; my uncle attacked early. Which didn’t surprise me in the least. Scanning the open field, I noticed a silhouette of a body on the ground a few yards ahead of us, and then Nolen took off after it. Trent tried to grab hold of his tail but he was too fast.

I hung back with the others as they whined for him to stop. He was stronger now. I didn’t have any reason to hold him back. Nolen seemed to be worried about something and when he got to the dead wolf on the ground, he turned his gaze back to us. Motioning for us to follow him.

We stalked through the back of the territory and rounded a building I could only assume was the packhouse. The commotion from the battle was deafening as it rang in my ears and the stench of the dead bodies and blood assaulted our noses. Snarls and yelps came from the east, which spurred us on faster. Bodies littered the ground as we sprinted to the battle, now in progress. I spotted a few wolves that I had trained laying in a pool of their own blood. My heart constricted at the loss of their lives. They were too good to die like this. For a tyrant that didn’t care about one single wolf on this battlefield. The rage from the unnecessary loss of life fueled me onward to find and kill my uncle.

He is going to die!I couldn’t agree more with Aloysius as I raced with the rogue pack.

I joined the fray with the group tearing into wolves that I didn’t recognize and trying to make the ones I knew to stop fighting. But I was no longer their alpha, and it had been ten years since I had seen these young pups.

Trying my best to keep from killing the ones I knew. I broke legs and rammed them to hopefully keep them out of the battle. They didn’t deserve this. They had too much life yet to live. I spotted a grey wolf with black on her underbelly tearing into wolves with such ferociousness that I definitely wasn’t going near her. She looked like she could even best me and I wasn’t going to chance that.

I made my way through the battlefield, breaking the bones of the wolves that I knew and then killing the ones I didn’t know. That’s when I noticed that some of the wolves that were attacking the Quartzite wolves turned and started attacking the Dolostone wolves. I guess the gamma was right about Nolen’s pack. They saw him and their allegiance changed.

Nolen and a grey and white wolf were battling together. That had to be the other alpha that Nolen had trained with as a pup. I spotted my uncle fighting with some wolves; I went to start toward them when another wolf rammed into me. Knocking the breath out of me, along with getting me off my feet. I got back up to my paws, about to rush the wolf, when I noticed it was Naik.
