I cocked my head, and the golden wolf shook his at me. Since we weren’t pack mates, we weren’t able to mindlink. But I knew what he was telling me. It wasn’t time yet. Nolen and the other alpha ran to my uncle as he was fighting the small pack of wolves. My uncle threw a wolf, and they jumped in unison over him. Before they could get to him, a band of Dolostone wolves cut them off.

By the way Nolen was acting, I could tell that he was fighting with his wolf to go after my uncle. I feel the same way, Nolen. I thought to myself as more wolves circled the small band of Dolostone wolves. They all shifted back and laid on the ground in submission. A couple of them I recognized, the others I didn’t.

They knew they had lost. The grey and white wolf raised his head and howled. Others joined him and the sound of victory rang through the land as wolves shifted back to their human forms. The victory was bittersweet as I saw some of the pack that I had helped train lay on the ground in a pool of their own blood. This was going to happen and there was no telling how many had been lost before this battle.

I lopped over to one of the young wolves. I had broken a leg and shifted back to my human form. The shock on his face as he shifted back to his human form told me he knew who I was. Helping him up with his good arm, I walked with him to where they were treating the wounded.

Making my way back over to the rogue wolves I had been with for six years, I noticed that Nolen was heading our way. They both stopped in front of us and we all bowed our heads before Nolen introduced us. “Sawyer, this is Olli, Fin, Markus, Hannah, and Harley. Guys, this is Sawyer, the Alpha of Quartzite pack and my best friend.”

More wolves came up and surrounded us, all of them on one knee. It seemed like this was the Rhyolite wolves. They were a skinny bunch of wolves. I was surprised that they could even fight in the condition that they were in. If these wolves looked like this, then there was no telling what the wolves from Dolostone looked like.

I watched as Nolen knelt down in front of a red-headed male and raised his head. The shock on his face must have meant that he knew the wolf. “Lucas! Where’s Daylen and Axel?”

“Daylen is here somewhere.” It wasn’t lost on me that he didn’t mention the other wolf that Nolen had asked about. His voice was raspy, telling me he hadn’t used it much.

“Axel?” Nolen’s wary voice was answered by the shaking of the wolf’s shoulders. He didn’t make it and by the way he acted it was a while ago.

“He’s dead. Wade killed him after he refused to be his beta. Left him on the ground for scavengers to pick at him while he rotted in front of the packhouse as a warning to anyone who went against him. I want to avenge his death.”

I could see my uncle doing that. I wonder whatever happened to Kalila? Did he leave her where she dropped? Did she get a funeral? I only hoped that Harlen had laid her to rest peacefully.

“We will. We will avenge all our brothers and sisters that he has taken from us. I promise you that.” Nolen grasped his hand and pulled him to stand. Glancing over the wolves that were his pack, I could see the defeat in his eyes. I felt that way right now at all the Dolostone lives slaughtered for nothing other than greed. “If you will take me back, Rhyolite pack, I promise you will never know hunger again; I will go hungry before you will.”

The Rhyolite wolves glanced over at the wolf named Lucas. He squared his shoulders and straightened his back. “There’s no better leader than you, Nolen. It might have been short, but we all appreciated that you tried to save us from battle with the Alpha challenge. Each and every one of us wants you back.”

Nolen nodded and clapped him on the shoulder. Another wolf ran up to him and the relief that washed over Nolen’s face told me that this was a wolf from his pack. But this one seemed to have a little more meat on his bones than the others. “What about my parents? Are they still alive?”

“Yes, they were still alive when we left. I don’t know if they will spare them if we attack them.” The way this wolf answered him had me thinking something was wrong. I was going to keep an eye on this wolf. My instincts were never wrong.

“Nolen, I have your back, man. We will take back the Rhyolite pack together like we always do. We are allies, and you’re practically my brother. I would do anything for you and your pack.” The Alpha named Sawyer spoke up, his hand landing on Nolen’s shoulder.

“Thank you, Sawyer. That means a lot to me.”

“No question, brother! You mean a lot to us, and we will always be your allies.”

Nolen’s head whipped up and his eyes began to glow with his wolf’s as he searched over the group of wolves that had circled around him. I could smell the scent of moon flowers again. When he finally spotted whoever he was looking for, the word that came from his mouth squeezed my heart.

“Mate!”

Blood covered the light brown-haired woman that ran to Nolen. She threw herself in his arms as he wrapped his around her. He had lived to be reunited with his mate. Nolen had told me about her, that she was younger than him. But now it looked like she was of age to know that he was her mate. I turned to leave. There were other places I could be of use instead of watching mates being reunited.

Chapter Nine

Markus and Hannah followed me over to the wolves that needed medical attention. A nurse brought us clothes over along with bandages and antiseptics to help clean wounds that would need time to heal. I went over to a pup that I knew back when I was in the Dolostone pack. The young wolf laid on his back; trying to hold back the pain that he was in from the bite in his side.

“You’ll be okay. I’m going to clean this up and bandage it.” Pouring the liquid on the bandage, I placed it over the wound. His wail was like nails on a chalkboard. He glanced over to me, his eyes welled with tears as I wrapped tape around the bandage to cover his wound.

“You look familiar.”

“Yeah? And who do I look like?” I asked him as I cleaned up the mess around him and me.

“Like the previous Dolostone Alpha. Only older. Are you him?” His eyes fluttered as he tried to keep them open. He had fight and that was a good thing. That meant he was going to survive this.

“No, I’m not. Rest and don’t think about the past, young wolf.” I stood and turned from him. That alpha was no longer me and he would never be me again.

“We really wish he would come back. Beta Harlen believes he will be back.” I turned to see him finally succumb to the fatigue from the wound and the battle. Sleep kid, one day you will have an alpha that actually knows your worth.

I glanced around to see if I could spot Harlen. Was he here in this battle? Did he make it? I hope he did, for the sake of Bella and his pups. They needed him. Hell, if he was game for it, he could be the next alpha of Dolostone and let his line continue the pack. Because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to take over and rebuild. Aloysius whimpered in my head, he didn’t like when I talked about not returning. He wanted me to go back because that was what I had promised Harlen all those years ago.
