“Nothing. Beta Mark, do you have a moment?” Grinning from one Beta to the other, I motioned for him to follow. Beta Mark nodded, stepping away from Harlen to come with me. We walked in silence, the nerves threatening to bubble over.

“Alpha Fin, is there something that I can help you with?” He glanced over at me as he cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck. The nervousness coming from him was not unnoticed by me.

“I’d like to talk to you about your daughter.” I told him as I stopped in my tracks beside the dark river which reflected the stars on its surface. It was one of the natural waterways that ran through my territory.

“What has she done now, Alpha Fin?” The tremble in his voice brought my attention back to him. The man had sweat racing down his face. His pupils were dilated as he stared at me. He thought she had upset me.

“She’s not in any trouble. I want to make her my chosen mate,” I told him as I held his gaze. His jaw slackened and his blue eyes widened. He wasn’t expecting that answer.

“Why would you want my daughter to be Luna? Don’t you want to wait for your mate?”

“I’ve been to every pack around here, and she was not at any of those. So, I’d like to take your daughter as a chosen since her mate rejected her.” Beta Mark turned his back on me before he paced in front of me.

“I thought something like that had happened. She was fine one moment and then sulking the next. Does she want to be your chosen?” He faced me, his arms crossed over his chest. The fierceness in his eyes reminded me of hers.

“I haven’t asked her. But I wanted to ask you first. I guess to get your blessing.”

“If she accepts, I would be fine with you choosing her, Alpha Fin.” Beta Mark nodded.

We made our way back to the crowd of wolves that were saying their goodbyes. Kalila had made friends with a few mated females from my pack while she was here. I spotted her talking to Jade and a few other she-wolves from my pack. The dress that she wore hugged her in all the right places as she held her suitcase. I chuckled since hopefully that bag and her would be staying here with me.

Making my way up to her, I place a hand on her shoulder. Kalila glanced up at me and smiled before she turned to face me. “Can I borrow you for a moment?”

“Of course, Alpha.” She sat the suitcase down and turned with me.

I led her away from the crowd and down a path through the woods to my favorite spot on my territory. Kalila strolled beside me, glancing around at the different flowers and trees that lined our route to our destination. I had never brought anyone to this spot, as I wanted to wait to bring my mate. In a way, I still was, only I was bringing my chosen instead of my fated. Aloysius whimpered in my head, but I ignored him.

When we arrived at the waterfall, a soft gasp sounded beside me, and I glanced over. Kalila’s hand hovered over her mouth as she stared at the thundering water racing to the silent lake below. I had the same reaction when I first found this spot as a teen. Knowing that one day I would share this beautiful sight with the one I would spend my life with.

I took her hand and steered her further around the lake. Our footsteps echoed off the rocks on the mountainside. To say I was a little nervous about this conversation was moot. She could reject being my chosen. It wouldn’t kill me if she did. Not like if a fated rejected you. Kalila didn’t die, so it might not kill too many of us.

We continued around the lake until we reached the other side of the waterfall. The crashing of the falling water sprayed us with rainbow droplets as the moon reflected off the clear liquid. She was such a beautiful woman. I couldn’t figure out why her mate would reject her.

Kalila spun to face me, her eyes wide with wonder. “What is this place?”

“This is my favorite place on my territory. I stumbled upon it when I was younger and vowed to only bring the special person in my life to see it with me.” I told her. The realization that swept over her features made me chuckle.

“But I’m not your fated mate. She could still be out there. Fin, what are you trying to tell me?” Her eyes searching mine as I tried to think of what to say.

“I know my fated could still be out there, but she could also be dead. Kalila, I’d like for you to be my chosen mate. I’d love for you to stand by my side and be my Luna of Dolostone pack.” I stood there in front of her as she stared at me. Tears formed in her eyes as her hands covered her mouth and nose.

“Do you really mean this? Fin, we have only known each other for a week. What about my father?” She dropped her hands and stepped forward, resting her head on my chest. I pulled her close as I wrapped my arms around her small, delicate frame.

“I really do mean this, and I’ve already spoken to your father. He is fine with me choosing you if you accept. Besides, why does it matter that we have only known each other for a week? I have my whole life to spend with you, learning more about you each and every day.”

Kalila pulled away from me to stare up into my eyes. All she was going to find was the truth because she was the one I wanted, and I knew she would be good for the pack. She smiled at me and then nodded. “Okay, I’ll be your chosen.”

Chapter Two

Isat in my office going through the pack expenses when a knock came upon the door. Kalila was out shopping with Jade and Harmony, so I knew the person behind them wasn’t my mate. It had been two months since I announced that Kalila would be my Luna and had her ceremony. She made me happy every day.

“Come in.”

The door opened, and my uncle strolled in. Uncle Wade came back to live with our pack after his mate died. Setting down my pen, I shut the books as he approached my desk. My uncle liked to put his nose in matters that he had no business being in. His hard eyes latched onto mine, and he tried to smile. Which he didn’t pull off. He was one of the people in my pack that didn’t like that I took Kalila as my chosen instead of waiting for my fated.

“What brings you to see me, uncle?”

Uncle Wade plopped down in one of my high-backed leather chairs and crossed his leg over his knee. The black pants tightened around his legs and thighs as he got comfortable. He stared at me for the longest before he grinned at me. My uncle never really liked that I had taken over without a mate at my side.
