“Well, nephew, I’ve noticed an influx of rogues at our borders. Something that hasn’t happened in some time. Do you have a plan in place to handle them?” he pulled his gaze from mine to look at his hand and nails.

Inwardly, I growled. My wolf Alloysius didn’t like what he was implying. I sat up straighter in my leather chair, regarding him with a glare. “The pack warriors know their orders. I know this isn’t the reason you are here. What do you want, uncle?”

“Always one to know a bullshitter. That’s your father’s side in you.” Uncle Wade shifted in his chair, swapping his crossed leg with the other. “What were you thinking, taking a chosen mate? You could’ve been stronger with a fated.”

“Uncle, I don’t have to explain why I did what I did. The pack is fine with her, and she is a strong wolf. If this is all you want of me, you can leave my office.” I told him as I leaned back in my chair. My uncle stood from his seat and bowed his head before turning on his heel and heading out the door.

Sometimes I believed that he was after my pack. Especially now that I had chosen my mate. Most of the pack loved her, and that is all that mattered. She was everything that I could’ve needed in a mate.

Quartzite’s Alpha had called me, wanting to arrange a meeting with me, him, and the Rhyolite’s pack alpha. This was nothing new since they tried to form an alliance when my father was Alpha, and he refused to meet with them. I thought it was stupid not to. Why not have the support of the other two large packs in the region?

This was another thing that I felt like my uncle had sway over my father. As much as he told me I was like my father in spotting a bullshitter, my father couldn’t from a mile away. Uncle Wade seemed to want to alienate us from the others. But with me leading this pack, he would never be in my ear whispering his lies. I picked up the phone on my desk and called the Quartzite pack. Someone picked up on the other end. “Hello?”

The soft voice of a little girl came through the receiver. At first, I thought I might have called the wrong number. “Is Alpha Roman there?”

“Oh, you have a very big voice! Just like my daddy! Are you an Alpha too!” The little girl giggled as she breathed in the speaker. Some part of me wanted that someday. To have a little mini-me running around or a mini Kalila.

“Yes, I am. Do you know where your daddy is?” I asked her again, a little more gently. She giggled again just as a door opened on the other side of the phone. The sound of footsteps resonated through the phone.

“Amora! I’m expecting an important phone call! Why are you in my office?” I heard a stern male voice on the other side. The little pup giggled again as the footsteps came closer to their destination.

“I was just talking to the other Alpha. He said he needed to talk to you.” She said sweetly. I had a feeling that little pup could get away with murder. A sigh and another giggle sounded out as the phone was exchanged.

“Hello? This is Alpha Roman.” The gruff voice of the Alpha came on the phone.

“Hello, Alpha Roman. This is Alpha Fin from Dolostone. You had wanted to arrange a meeting between my pack, yours, and Rhyolite. I would be more than willing to come to this meeting. When would you like to set this up?” I asked him as I stood to stare out the window. Kalila and Jade had just made it to the packhouse and unloaded the stuff along with some warriors. I swear the woman bought things for the rest of the pack before herself.

“Ah, Alpha Fin! Yes, we can meet in two days if that is okay with you. I’m sure Alpha Nero would be delighted to meet with you. Hopefully, we can come to an alliance.”

“Of course, that will be fine. Where would this meeting take place?” The smile on Kalila’s face brought a grin to my lips. She was so beautiful standing there under the brightly lit sky.

“We will have it here in my pack.” The groan of a chair on the other side reverberated through the receiver.

“That’s fine. I will see you in two days.” We said our goodbyes, and I returned the receiver to its holder. Hopefully, with an alliance with the next two largest packs, we can build a better comradeship with other packs in the region.

I walked into the brightly lit dining room, where Kalila and the omegas were standing around the table, making up the following weeks’ dinner plans for the pack. She always wanted to make sure that we tried something different each night. The omegas bowed their heads as I approached them, and Kalila turned to me.

With her sudden movement, I noticed the subtle change in her scent. I grinned as I tried to figure it out. As soon as I reached her, I pulled her in and kissed her. She never seemed to mind my public displays of affection. If I didn’t know any better, I would bet that she loved it just as much as I did. Kalila softly pushed me away as she giggled. “Fin! There are young eyes in the room!”

“Don’t worry, love. I won’t do much more than kiss you. How was shopping? Did you get anything for yourself?” I let her step back from me, and she took a deep breath. As she fixed her hair that I had ruffled.

“Yes, and no. More like for the both of us. But mostly for the pack. I got the nursery some new blankets and onesies. And I got some new training mats for the training wolves.” Like I said, she only really thinks about the pack.

“Kalila.”

She smiled at me and then continued her discussion with the omegas. The doors opened, and I saw Harlen coming in. He didn’t look too happy. Actually, he looked pissed. He bowed his head to Kalila and me before he straightened up. “Harlen what’s the matter?”

“That damn uncle of yours is trying to change your orders to the border patrol. He thinks that your plan isn’t good enough.” Harlen snarled, his face red as an apple. I had only seen him this mad before when I was a teen.

I took a deep breath before turning to Kalila and kissing her on the temple. Motioning for him to lead the way. My uncle really didn’t get the concept that he wasn’t the Alpha. Harlen led me through the doors and out to where the leaders of the patrols were at. The sun was still high in the sky and the weather was warm enough to still allow the younger wolves to swim. A soft breeze brought with it the smell of peony and cedar while it ruffled my hair and clothes. The scent had always been a favorite of mine.

Each of the leaders shook their heads as I made my way toward them on the dirt walkway. I could tell my uncle was getting mad at them for refusing to obey him. His hand gestures were getting more and more erratic. But they would never obey him unless he took over, which wouldn’t happen unless he challenged or killed me.

“Uncle!” I bellowed, bringing everyone’s attention to me. The leaders of the patrols dropped to one knee, both fists on the ground, as my uncle spun on his heel. I shook my head. I hated this salute.

“Ah. Nephew! I was just telling these incompetent leaders that you wanted to change the plan.” I swear that he had to have something wrong with his brain. Like he was getting dementia in his older age, which was unlikely since we were wolves.

“Uncle, I didn’t tell you to come to them and change the plan. My plan is solid. Please stop harassing them. They aren’t going to deviate from their orders.” I was being nicer to him than he deserved, that was for sure. Once I was stable in my pack, he would be gone. One way or the other and my father would have no say.
