Whenever I sent men to Burntwood to sniff around, that fucking biker club spotted them and the locals noticed everyone new and asked questions. Nobody could get in without being noticed.

“Could her ex actually be behind taking her?” I wasn’t convinced a farmer was intelligent enough to pull off such a high-tech mission.

“Maybe he thought he was rescuing her.”

I glared at Elliot. “We’ve been through this. Shelby had her freedom so long as she stayed with me.”

“It appears she didn’t want to stay, sir.” If he hadn’t been my grandfather’s trusted confidant and guard, I’d put a bullet in his skull for talking to me that way. “And her ex helped her get away.”

“How unfortunate for him. If he’d had half a brain, he would’ve stayed the fuck away from her. I would’ve spared his life then.”

“What do you plan to do, sir?”

I glanced at Elliot, then back at the image. “This little guy needs to grow and get stronger before I reunite with his mother. Wouldn’t want her to miscarry.” I typed my question into the search engine of my computer. “Once she enters the second trimester, we’ll take her.” I needed to get knowledgeable about pregnancy and find the best baby doctor.

“And take her where?”

“Here, of course. While I wait, I’ll set up a nursery.” I couldn’t go back to California after the masked men had taken Shelby. We still didn’t know who they were or if they’d been after me.

“Might be worth waiting longer. You could fake your death, so they lowered their guard.”

“I like that idea. Then Shelby would come out of hiding and I could come back from the dead. But we can figure out the details later.” I brushed my hand at him to leave.

Elliot nodded and left.

I gazed at my baby.

Don’t worry, son. I’ll rescue you from that filthy farmer and give you the privileged life you deserve, with or without your mother.

The spring growth was still weeks away, but despite the bland barren land, I took comfort in being happily in love and twenty weeks pregnant, halfway through my pregnancy.

Life was glorious, even if I couldn’t leave the cabin unchaperoned.

I threw back the blankets and got up to shower. My morning sickness hadn’t been an issue for several weeks, and my appetite had returned, which meant I was starving at six thirty in the morning.

“Morning, Honeybee. I wasn’t expecting to see you up this early. Look at you all dressed and looking fine.” He came up behind, rubbed my baby bump and kissed my neck. “You should be resting. How are you feeling?”

“I feel amazing. If you were here fifteen minutes ago, you would’ve found me naked,” I teased him, pushing my butt against his cock.

“I can fix that.” He sucked on my neck, and I felt him grow hard as he pushed his dick against my bottom.

“Awe, you’re too late, handsome. I’m heading over to my parents to see the baby chicks. Don’t tell me you forgot. It’s been forever since I’d gotten to hold day-old chicks.”

“I didn’t forget. I have some things to do around here, anyway.” He sighed disappointedly.

“Here’s a little something to hold you over until later.” I cradled his handsome face and smashed my mouth against his, to get his motor roaring, and slipped my tongue into his mouth.

He groaned and tightened his embrace. “You’re a naughty wifey, Honeybee, for making me want you even more.”

I giggled and pulled away. “I need to move the sausage off the burner.”

“Go ahead, save the meat, but let mine suffer.”

“Now who’s the naughty one, the naughty hubby?” We’d gone to the courthouse the day after Valentine’s and got hitched. We both wanted to make it legal just in case something happened with Jake. But my ex hadn’t resurfaced yet. It was driving me crazy, waiting for him to make a move.
