“Why’d you really come today?” I stopped him before we entered the cafeteria.

“Told ya. I was running errands and wanted to see you.”

“It was perfect. I needed to see you.” I popped up on my toes, holding on to his shoulders, and gave him a passionate kiss.

He snaked his hands around my waist, but I could tell he wouldn’t let himself get swept away. I was sure he was dying inside to make love to me, and he would soon.

The look of adoring love in Cade’s eyes warmed me to the core as we sat on his couch, devouring our burgers and onion rings. He’d got a fire going the second we entered the cabin. It was a chilly evening, the coldest so far in October. Halloween was in two days, and winter would arrive in November, as it did every year.

We hadn’t talked about the assault or Jake since the morning I told him everything. No doubt Cade would listen if I brought it up, but I wanted to put it behind me as fast as possible. Jake would not steal anymore from me.

I had a lot of decisions to make, mostly about my job at the museum. My boss obviously knew about the masked men who’d taken me and Martina. Somehow the event hadn’t been broadcasted, and I wasn’t sure how it hadn’t made it onto social media. People in the museum had recorded it. When I asked Cade about it, he’d told me his connections took care of everything. I left it alone because I trusted him with my life.

With a dreamy sigh, I gathered up our garbage and took it to the kitchen.

“What’s on your mind?” He tracked my every move with a contented smile on his handsome face.

“Just thinking about stuff.”

“What kind of stuff?”

I wiped down the counter, keeping our gazes locked. The past couple of nights, Cade had surprised me with one of my favorite treats. The first night, he brought me kettle corn to munch on while we watched a movie. Last night, chocolate dipped strawberries were waiting for me when I opened the fridge to get us a beer. I adored his thoughtfulness. How he seemed to know my every need after all these years and met them flawlessly.

“Are we having a staring contest, baby? You know I always win.”

I blinked on the spot.

“Told ya.”

“You’re such a stinker.” I washed my hands, dried them, and returned to the couch.

“Is there something you want to talk about?”

“Sort of.”

He hiked a curious brow.

“Maybe it’s more show you.”

“Show me?”

“Mhm.” I smiled and scooted closer to him. “Am I making you nervous?”

He belly laughed. “More like that look in your eyes is scary.”

“Aww, I just want to love my man as much as he’s loved me.”

“Keep talking, because I like what I’m hearing,” he teased.

“Nope. No talking. Just showing.” I was getting hot and bothered, and it was a good thing. Taking his hands, I tugged him to his feet.

“Where are we going?”

“Shh.” I guided him while I walked backward toward his room, turned him around and pushed him onto the bed.

“Shelby.”

“If you don’t want me, say so now.”
