“I know she is. Hollywood is a good guy. A player for sure, but he’ll protect her.”

“I meant safe from getting her heart broken.”

“I doubt her heart is safe.” He peered at me with a serious expression. “As far as I know, Hollywood enjoys his freedom.”

“We should go back.” I let go of his hand and turned on my heels to rescue my sister.

“She’s a grown woman, Shelby.” Cade’s arms wrapped around my waist and tugged me against his chest. He lowered his mouth to my jawline and kissed it. “Missed you, Honeybee.”

A couple of nurses passed us, smiling and snickering.

“I think she really likes him.”

“I said, missed you, Honeybee.” He turned me around and put me against the wall. Lifting my chin with his finger, he kissed me softly.

“He’ll charm the pants off her, then break her heart,” I told him through his kisses and scrunched my face in frustration. The stinker was trying to distract me, and I wouldn’t let him. Olivia had a fragile heart, and I hadn’t been around during the many times a boy used her, took her for granted, and dumped her. “She needs me, Cade.”

“I see you didn’t grow out of having a one-track mind.” His lips captured mine and spread them apart. He slipped his tongue into my mouth to play with mine. Or maybe it was to silence me. Either way, my skin sizzled and my lady bits tingled as he smashed me against the hospital wall.

The shameless man didn’t give a crap who saw us making out. He was wild and passionate. Stole opportunities when they presented themselves. And he couldn’t ever get enough of me. I loved that about him.

“One more time. Missed you, Honeybee.” He palmed my bottom, and I bucked into him.

“Missed you too, Cade.”

“That’s my girl. I better back away before I mess my pants.”

“Thought I felt you growing hard.” I blew out an aroused breath and fanned my face.

“Damn, Shelby.” Cade tilted his head, hiked his brow, and shot me a smoldering look. “You’re a lot faster with the comebacks.”

“Do you like it?”

“I like everything about you.” He took my hand. “What do you want for supper?”

“A juicy cheeseburger and onion rings.”

“Spicy dipping sauce?”

“You know it.”

“Takeout from Hotshots it is.”

“Can’t wait.” Just thinking about onion rings made my mouth water. Today I noticed my appetite was returning. Cade had cooked up Denver omelets for breakfast, and I had finished every bit of mine.

He was so good to me. I felt like a fool for all the years we’d lost. But as we made our way back to the cafeteria, holding hands, I was healing. It had everything to do with Cade being my rock and soft place all at once.

We hadn’t had sex, just lots of kissing and cuddling in bed. Cade had told me he would follow my lead. God, he was incredible.

I was getting closer to being ready, which to some might be too soon. But hey, everyone was different, and I was determined not to let Jake steal my joy. There was just one thing I needed to know…

“We’re together, right? Like an official couple?”

“Yes, ma’am. Why do you ask?”

“I’ve wasted so much of our lives being stupid, selfish, and stubborn. It pisses me off I did this to us.”

“It’s good to see your feistiness returning. Don’t worry about anything. We’ll get to where we’re going in time.”
