Cain stares at me with his no-bullshit glare that probably had hundreds of criminals confessing when he worked for the FBI. “It’s better to start getting help before you need it.”

I groan because I know he’s right. “Fine. I’ll go.”

Cain gives me his cocky smirk before he turns and leaves the room, leaving me to get redressed. I find all the guys in the kitchen when I get downstairs. They’re facing off with Z. “I’m getting breakfast on campus.”

He scowls at Cain, blocking the door. “With that girl?” Nox asks.

“The one who thinks I’m a sweetheart?” Cain asks with that same damn smirk.

“Yeah,” Z agrees.

What the hell did I miss? When did Z’s girl call Cain a sweetheart? Why would she call him that? I actually know the guy and he’s, like, the furthest thing possible.

Cain looks over at Nox. “Did you find anything on her?”

Nox purses his lips and jerks his head back and forth. “Nope, she’s a ghost. Her acceptance and dorm assignment were all done on the same day, like, a week and a half ago.”

Cain frowns. “That’s weird.”

Nox nods. “Everything about her is clean. Too clean. I think she’s hiding from something. I don’t trust her.”

Z growls at Nox. “Leave her alone. If you must know, yeah, she’s hiding from something. I guess her dad was super controlling. Like, not letting her out of the house alone controlling. She freaked out when I said I wanted to put her in a bubble. She was so freaked out she went complexly blank like Cain does. Don’t fucking bother her. This is non-negotiable. Got it?” He ends up towering over Nox, who just looks at him with wide eyes.

Nox clenches his jaw. “Fine. But I’m going to keep digging digitally. Something isn’t adding up.”

Z grits his teeth. “Fine. But nothing you find about her will change my mind.” He turns on his heel and storms out, slamming the front door behind him.

“Jesus, he’s obsessed,” I say, still looking at the door.

Nox rolls his eyes when I turn back to them. “She’s just as bad as he is. Pretty sure she actually considered it when he asked her to marry him yesterday.”

Cain chokes on his coffee, and it drips down his white shirt. “Shit,” he grunts, tugging his tie loose and snapping open the buttons.

“You’re joking, right?” I ask Nox.

He shakes his head, his brows furrowed. “Now that Zane told us about her dad, what she says makes sense.”

“Well?” Cain snaps expectantly.

Nox raises his brows, making Cain wait a moment. Out of all of us, Nox and Cain always butt heads. Nox is a stubborn shit, and he doesn’t put up with Cain’s demanding attitude. “She said she wasengaged, but that nobody asked her and her dad was making wedding plans.”

My brows raise on their own at that. “Well, that’s messy. Glad I don’t have to deal with it.” I grab a croissant and head out. “See you guys later!” I call over my shoulder and I leave.

I’m in the middle of shoving an embarrassingly large bite of syrupy waffles into my mouth when Zane sits down in the seat next to me. His plate is full of steaming scrambled eggs, bacon, and a fruit salad on the side. He looks at my plate that is of just waffles and then looks at my face, which probably has syrup dripping down my chin. “Are you a vegetarian?”

I shake my head, forcing myself to swallow the mostly chewed waffles. “No. I just like carbs.”

Sandy laughs. “This girl runs for five miles every morning before doing a ‘cool down’ workout in the pool. She needs those carbs to keep her figure.”

I frown at her. “When I lose weight, it all comes out of my boobs.”

“Wouldn’t want that,” Zane says with a chuckle as I elbow him. “No, I was just wondering because Cain’s a vegetarian too. I would have asked him where to take you for dinner.”

My mouth hangs open. “Dinner? Wait, Dr. Price is a vegetarian?” Somehow that was the most surprising thing out of what he said.

Zane nods, taking a bite of his eggs before he answers me. “Yeah. Meat makes him nauseous after some cannibal casehe worked on.”
