She hesitates for a moment, likely wanting to disagree. “I’ll have the same.” I pay and we move over to the side to collect our drinks. “You didn’t have to pay for me,” she says with her brows slightly furrowed.

I shrug one shoulder. “Zane would have my ass if he found out I invited you to coffee and then made you pay,” I justify, which is true, but if she was anyone else, I would have just dealt with the argument.

Our order gets called and I grab both drinks before leading her to a small table in the corner. She sits down hesitantly. Passing her the cup, I lean forward on my elbow as she takes a sip of it. She moans as soon as the coffee touches her tongue and then promptly covers her mouth with her hand. Wide eyes meet mine and I grin. “It’s delicious, huh?”

She nods. “Yeah. I’ve never had a raspberry flavored coffee.”

I chuckle. “It’s seasonal. They only have it for, like, the first month of class or so.”

A smile spreads across her lips. “So, I’ll just have to get one every day while I can.”

A full laugh leaves me and I nod in agreement. “Pretty much. It’s my favorite.”

A small, soft smile reaches her lips but fades pretty quickly. She looks nervous, and it bothers me that it’s the reaction I get from her. I want her to be as comfortable with me as she is with Zane, but that feeling is confusing since I really don’t trust her. “So, did you want something? Why did you invite me here? Is this about Zane?”

I suck in a breath and tilt my head to the side. “A little. Zane can be a bit intense at times. He would never do anything to hurt you, but I just want you to be careful, okay?”

Her brows furrow. “Why? Is there something I should worry about?”

I sigh. “Not that I know of. What I do know is that Zane never lets anyone touch him. He doesn’t even like it when we touch him and we’ve known him or years. I don’t want him to hurt you accidentally. He would be devastated if that happened.”

She glares at me, her hand tightening on her cup. “Listen, I may not know Zane that well, but I know him better than to think he would hurt me, even if I hurt him first.” She stands up and turns to leave, but I grab her elbow.

“Just promise to tell either me or Cain if he ever does something to hurt you, or that makes you uncomfortable.”

She scoffs, “You’remaking me feel uncomfortable.”

She yanks her arm away and storms out, the door slams behind her. Most of the customers eye me suspiciously, so I decide it won’t be a good idea to follow behind her. I know where she’s going anyway.

Nox

Viv’s coming in hot.

Cain

What did you do?

Nox

Nothing bad, we just had a talk about Zane.

Cain

Then why did she just storm into my room looking pissed, glaring at anyone who dares to look at her? Including me.

I wince at that. Maybe I shouldn’t have brought him into my conversation with her.

Nox

I just tried to get her to understand that Zane could be dangerous and told her to tell one of us if anything happens.

Cain

You’re an idiot.

That’s all I get, and I started to wonder if he’s right. We both know how volatile Zane can be, especially in stressful situations. While I know Zane would rather die than hurt Viv or so he claims, that’s what really scares me. There are a lot of ways to hurt someone by accident. I’m worried about what he would do if that ever happened.
