Nox is watching me when I pull away. I give him a shrug, not bothering to explain myself or give any excuses. There were none to give anyway. I’ve fallen for her. Viv is the only girl I can even look at without making my skin feel itchy. I fell in love with my best friend’s girl. Even if she doesn’t know it yet, that’s what she is. She’s Zane’s girl, and I’m an asshole because I don’t think I could give her up, even for him.

Viviana

I’m pissed and in pain. Two classes. Those assholes made me miss two classes yesterday. Thankfully, my sign language professor films her lectures since she also teaches online. She agreed to give me the video after I sent her a very realistic doctor’s note for breaking my rib. I barely remember what happened last night. I know I woke up and Dr. Price was yelling at me. I don’t know if I imagined it or if Zane actually pushed him to the ground.

Things are just weird and confusing. I don’t honestly know all that I told them. I do know I turned down those devil pills when Nox tried to get me to take some more this morning before class. He kept throwing me concerned glances during our sociology class and I was getting sick of it. So I scratched my nose…with my middle finger. Very subtle, Viviana. Very subtle. I would have patted myself on the back if it wouldn’t have drawn too much attention.

Once class was blessedly over, I hurried out, ignoring Nox calling my name. He caught up to me down the hall, since I didn’t have anywhere to go anyway. “Are you okay?” he asks as I stop to lean against the wall with my eyes closed.

I nod. “Note to self: no running with broken ribs.” I move my finger in the air like I’m checking something off a list.

Nox chuckles, giving me a rare grin and I freeze, watching the expression. His face falls. “What’s wrong?”

I shake my head. “Nothing. You just don’t smile very often. It’s nice.” I scrunch up my nose. “Now I sound like one of those creepy guys telling a pretty girl she should smile more.”

Another smile curves Nox’s lips. “You think I’m pretty?”

I laugh and shake my head and his mouth falls once more. “Zane and Dr. Price are both pretty men.” I look around the hall to make sure nobody is listening. “You and Sloane are handsome. There’s nothing pretty about either of you.”

His mouth drops open. “You think I’m as handsome as Sloane?”

I furrow my brows. “Of course. You’re all attractive in your own ways. Sloane, however, knows it. Honestly, with all his confidence, he could be butt-ass ugly and make people think he’s hot just because he believes it.”

Nox laughs loudly at that. “I’m sorry, but hearing you say ‘butt-ass’ was just hilarious.”

I roll my eyes at him. “Hush up. I know your secret.”

He frowns at me, leaning in. “What secret?”

I glance around like it’s something huge before leaning in to whisper. “You’re secretly just a mother hen.” I lean back and his brow furrows low over his eyes as he cocks his head to one side. I shrug. “You take care of everyone. They live in your house, you cook for them, you take care of them when they’re injured. Hell, you even loaned Zane a shirt to wear on our date.”

Nox frowns impossibly deeper. “Did Zane tell you all that?”

I shake my head and smirk. “Nope. Your name’s on the deed of the house filed with the county clerk. He just told me you like to cook.”

Nox taps his pointer finger against the tip of my nose. “You’re too damn perceptive and apparently nosey.”

My phone starts to ring and my brow furrows. Zane and Sloane should still be in class. With ragged breaths, I pull the phone out.

Enzo.

Enzo is calling me. “Shit.”

I answer because I have no real choice. “What’s wrong?”

“So you’re still free, Vivy?” his rough voice asks with his signature chuckle.

I roll my eyes, looking around. Dr. Price’s room is dark, so I push the door open and walk inside with Nox hot on my heels. “Yep. It’ll take more than those two idioti1 to get the better of me.”

Enzo sighs and there’s a long pause. “Listen, Vivy, your papa put Luca in charge of your recovery.”

My knees go out, and I find myself sitting on the floor. “No. No. No,” I say over and over again.

“Shhh, I’ll be there tonight. I can’t stand for this. We’re supposed to respect our women, not hand them over to mostri,2” Enzo says firmly.
