Zane splutters, “No. I absolutely did not.”

I’m still trying to puzzle it out in my head as the tap of leather-soled shoes echoes down the hall. Cain pauses by us. “Zane.” He gives him a manly nod before turning to me. “Miss Russo.” He grins, stepping closer. “I knew you’d look good in plaid,” he murmurs before walking off to his classroom.

My mouth falls open, completely shocked at this turn of events. I never even considered this as an option. Not seriously, anyway. Zane growls low in his throat and goes to follow after him, but I grab his arm to stop him. “Don’t. You’ll make a scene. You can yell at him at home. He’s probably doing this to get under our skin.”

“Well, it’s working.” Zane takes a moment to breathe deeply. “He’s probably still upset he lost that race.”

I nod, though I’m not so sure. He didn’t seem that upset when he lost. He seemed more upset about Ethan attacking me than anything else. I look over at the clock at the end of the hall and give Zane a sad smile, pressing my palm against his chest. “I’ll see you later tonight after tutoring?”

Zane frowns and shakes his head. “I can’t. Cain has me doing a job tonight.”

That’s all I ever get about any of their secretive jobs. The way the others talk about it so flippantly makes me think it’s just something mundane, but the way Zane talks about doing a job with a manic gleam and excitement in his eyes makes me think it’s something so much bigger.

He bends down and presses a firm kiss to my lips with his hands planted on my hips. He’s started doing this when we kiss in public to keep me from literally trying to jump him like a nymphomaniac. It’s an issue I have absolutely no control over. I know what he can do with his hands and mouth. Now every time he touches me, I crave more of him.

A throat clears and Zane pulls away to snarl at Nox, who just quirks a brow at him. “It’s almost time for class.” He taps his watch as he walks into the room. Zane presses a soft kiss to my cheek and pulls back to watch me go into the classroom.

Sitting down in my usual seat, I take my notes and pretend like I don’t notice the way Nox’s attention is drawn to me. I must be losing the plot, because I’m literally getting turned on just because he keeps checking out my legs. I need to get my head shrinked. If it was smaller, I wouldn’t have all this room for thoughts.

When class finally ends, I hurry out with the other students, but Nox catches up with me as I make my way to the normal spot I sit and wait for Cain’s class to start. “Hey, Viv!” he calls out to stop me. I smile at him because, honestly, Nox is one of my favorite people, even if he generally keeps things close to the chest.

“What’s up?” I ask, turning to face him.

I don’t miss the way his eyes track the swishing of my skirt as Iturn. “I was just wondering how you’re doing in class. Bowing was worried because you’re the only student who hasn’t made an appointment to ask for extra help during office hours.”

I shake my head. “I’m fine, really. If I have any questions, I’ll be sure to make an appointment.”

Nox scratches the side of his nose. “You could always text me. I usually have my phone on me at all times.”

“Even in the shower?” I ask, completely joking.

Nox chuckles. “I could start bringing it. It is waterproof.”

I nod seriously. “Yeah. We’ll be shower text buddies. Not really, because I’m pretty sure my phone isn’t waterproof.”

Nox shrugs. “Guess we’ll just have to be regular texting buddies.”

“I’d like that,” I tell him, looking down at my toes, since they’ve suddenly become so interesting.

“Bowing actually wanted me to talk to you about something else.” He pauses until I look up to meet his gaze. “He wants you to consider switching your major to sociology.” Before I can say no, he says, “I know, I know. I told him you would never switch, but he made me promise to ask you anyway.”

I give him a soft smile. “I came here mostly for Dr. Price. I can’t give up the opportunity to learn from him.”

Nox glances over my shoulder and huffs, “Speak of the devil and he shall appear.”

Cain’s smooth drawl catches my attention. “Are you trying to poach my students now?”

Nox raises his hands. “I’m just doing what I’m asked. Take it up with Bowing if you have a problem with it.” His eyes find mine and he smiles. “I’ll, uh, text you later?”

“Sounds great,” I tell him, trying to ignore the rapid increase in my heartbeat at the thought of him texting me.

“Russo. My office, please,” Cain snaps, stepping back into his office.

I’ve never actually been inside his office before, and now that the offer is on the table, my curiosity is piqued. Everything is so predictable that I’m honestly a little disappointed. It’s neat, with everything in its place. Not a scrap of lint is on any surface. Cain leansback against his desk, not going behind it to sit down. “Close the door, please.” I do so easily, and he rubs the back of his fingers under his chin. “Lock it too.”

I’m a little more hesitant as I do that. I’m not sure why he wants me locked in a room with him. “I’m going to punish you today. You can say no if you want to.” He stalks toward me as he talks, making me feel like a mouse who caught the attention of a lion.

“For what?” I ask, feeling the hair at the back of my neck rise as he closes in.
