Nox

Theoretically, why are we trying to kill forty people?

Zane

No reason. Could you guys provide the names and last known addresses of everyone you’ve had sex with?

There’s complete silence after that. I stare at the phone with my eye twitching.

Viv

I hate you. I’m never talking to any of you again!

I mute the chat and throw my phone onto the end of the bed. Maybe I should move and change my name again. Velma? No, that’s stupid. Valentina? That sounds like some kind of other woman in a mafia romance novel. Veronica? Nope, that’s a little too classy for me. Verity? Ooo, that’s pretty. I could totally be a Verity. I slip out of Sloane’s arms and grab my phone again.

When he wakes up a few minutes later, he finds me sitting on the edge of the bed, looking up travel arrangements. “What are you doing?” he mumbles, curling his body around me.

“Trying to figure out how to move to Antarctica. Apparently, you can only travel there between October and March and you can’t actually live there, which is a bummer. Maybe I should go with Alaska,” I tell him, gaping when he snatches my phone out of my hand to find that I am actually looking up how to get to Antarctica.

“Why are you trying to move to a frozen wasteland?” He looks upat me, grabbing his phone, but I snatch it out of his hand. He just raises his brows and I do the only thing logical at that point. I throw the thing against the wall across the room as hard as I can. Sloane springs up, gaping at me. “What was that for?” His low brows lower even more.

“Umm…oops. It just slipped. I’ll replace it with a new one.” I blink at him. He shakes his head, looking at his shattered phone on the floor. Thank dorm rooms for thick concrete walls. I just have to hope that he doesn’t have his messages connected to the cloud like some kind of idiot who wants the government reading his texts.

Sloane

Iopen the box to my new phone and start setting it up. By the time I got to the phone store, they had one ready for me. Apparently, Viv had called and paid for a replacement, even though I declined her offer. She even sprung for a newer model than my old one. Cain wanders into the kitchen, likely to be nosey. “You got a new phone?”

I frown at him. “Viv kind of freaked out and threw mine against her wall.” I shrug.

I’ve decided to just treat the weird shit Viv does like the weird shit Z does. I’ll never understand it, but that doesn’t change how much she means to me. “Did she break your phone before or after you read the messages Zane sent us?” he asks, leaning against the edge of the island.

I look up at that with my brows lowered. My head tilts to the side before I shake it. “What messages?”

Cain coughs, but it sounds more like he’s trying to hold back laughter. He just shakes his head and turns away from me, heading to the door. “It’s not important,” he says as he leaves.

That jerk is going to get punched one of these days. I decide toignore him as I finish setting up my phone. Once I’ve got everything in order, I send Viv a message.

Sloane

Thanks for the phone, even though I told you not to worry about it.

Viv

I broke it. I should replace it.

Sloane

Why exactly did you break it? Cain said something about some messages.

Viv

Umm, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

The fact she literally types a suspicious-assumminto her message makes me not believe her, but what can I really do about it? I mean, I guess I could go and ask Z about it. My phone vibrates again and I look down at it.

Viv

And don’t even bother asking Zane. He’s been threatened into silence.
