Her eyes snap toward me at that. Her lips twitch as she looks up and down my body before her eyes flick back to Sloane. “Come on, you can do better than taking up with your roommate’s leftovers. Isn’t she dating Zane anyway?”

Sloane smiles at her. “Yes, she is.” When Carol’s eyebrows furrow, he continues. “And she’s dating me.” When her mouth falls open, Sloane goes in for the kill. “Oh, and Nox.” He turns me away from the group and starts leading me to the exit.

I look over my shoulder at her. “Bye, Carly! It was good to see you again! I’ll see you this weekend, Sandy! Bye!”

When we step out into the cool night air, I look up at Sloane. “You know that none of you have actually asked me out, right?”

His mouth drops open as he looks down at me. “We’re all idiots.” I shrug my shoulders, not agreeing or disagreeing with him, because, I mean seriously, he and Zane both act like my boyfriends, but neither of them have actually stopped to ask me. Sloane looks away. “I’ll take care of it.” He nods at me before leading me to his car.

I’m not sure what I expected when Sloane told me we were getting dinner, but it definitely wasn’t for him to park outside of a tiny shack. A large awning spans down the center of the parking lot. There are a few picnic tables in the middle, but other than that, there are just two rows of parking spaces for cars to park on either side of a long patio.

Sloane points up to a large board under the awning and I squint my eyes at it. It’s a menu with different options of hamburgers and hotdogs. I blink up at him, furrowing my brow. This is a restaurant? There are a couple other cars parked with their headlights on, just like Sloane’s car. “Do you see anything you want?” he asks me.

He looks so excited that I don’t want to question if I’ll get food poisoning here. “Umm, a cheese burger sounds good.”

“Are you going to get fries? They’ve got really good fried mushrooms too.”

I smile at that. “I do like mushrooms.” I bite my bottom lip. “Order me whatever you think I’ll like.” I tell him, trusting him with my life—and stomach, apparently.

Sloane grins at that, just in time for a guy in a polo and baseball cap to approach the car with a notepad in hand. Sloane rolls the window down as the guy stops next to it. “What can I get for you guys?”

Sloane smiles over at me before turning back to the guy. “She’ll have a cheeseburger with fried mushrooms and a root beer float, and I’ll have a double cheeseburger with onion rings and a root beer float too. Please,” he adds on hastily to the end, like he almost forgot to say it.

The guy scribbles it down onto his order pad and nods his head. “Sure thing. It’ll be right out. Go ahead and turn off your headlights unless you need something else.”

He walks over to a small window where he passes our order through before he heads over to another car with its lights on to start the process all over again. Sloane turns off the headlights, leading back in his seat to look over at me. “So, have you ever been to a drive-in restaurant?”

I blink at him. “A drive-in restaurant? I’ve been to a drive-thru.” I furrow by brows, not understanding what makes them different. Is it just because we park while we wait for the food?

Sloane chuckles at that. “You lived in New York, which I know has a lot of these kinds of restaurants.”

I shrug. “My dad was more about attending fancy dinner parties in clothes that cost more than my school tuition.”

His brows go up at that, but he doesn’t say anything about it. “Well, this is a restaurant that you drive up to and they bring your food out and you eat in your car.”

I nod my head, starting to understand as I watch the guy working outside bring out a tray full of food to a car and somehow clip it onto their window. I glance over at Sloane to find him watching me. “What?” I ask, leaning back in my seat to look over at him.

He scratches the tip of his nose. “Is this okay? We can go somewhere else if you don’t want to eat here.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “No. I want to eat here.”

He grins at me. “Okay. Good, because I think that’s our food.” He nods at the worker again as he carries a tray toward Sloane’s car.

I watch as he uses magic hooks to hang the tray on Sloane’s slightly rolled up window. Sloane passes him some folded bills, and the guy smiles at him and heads off to keep working. Sloane hands me a wrapped burger and a small bag filled with fried mushrooms. Everything tastes delicious. I would have figured the food would be subpar, but everything is so good I kind of want to come back here at least once a week. When I scarf all my food down before Sloane even gets halfway done with his, he laughs at me before passing me my root beer float. It’s in a Styrofoam cup, but it tastes just as good, if not better, than the rest of the food. I take my time with it though, not wanting to get brain freeze.

When Sloane finishes his food and flips on the headlights, he turns to me. “So, what did you think?”

“That was the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth,” I tell him as I pass him my trash for him to put on the tray.

Sloane chuckles. “I think Zane might be offended by that.”

“What?” I tilt my head, not understanding, but then the sly look Sloane sends my way as the guy takes our tray and I understand.I am not a blusher! My cheeks burn and I imagine it’s just from the cool breeze coming in through the window as Sloane rolls it up and backs out of the parking space. These guys have changed so much in my life and I’ve enjoyed every second of it.

“Thanks for taking me out tonight. I had a really good time,” I tell Sloane as we get closer to the school.

Sloane reaches over, threading his fingers with mine as he drives. “Thanks for coming with me. I really enjoyed spending time with you tonight. We should so it again soon.” I smile at him, not thinking my voice will work since I’m pretty sure my brain is melting out of my ear from the smile he turns my way.
