She had decided to go about her days as if she was back like normal and that made me uneasy, even if I did understand why.

As I put my hand onto the door handle, someone hit me from behind.

I stumbled, catching myself on the side of the car before instinct kicked in and I turned around, ready to fight.

I stared at the three men who were grinning, gun raised at me.

“Don’t make us shoot the merchandise.” One of them said with a grin and I glared at him.

“What do you want?” I asked and he laughed.

“Vinnie wants to chat. Get in.” He gestured to a beat-up Ford across the road, and I sighed.

If I fought, I was likely to end up shot and I had no interest in getting shot today.

I could reason with Vinnie. I had before.

I followed them across the street, waiting as one of the men opened the door and waited for me to climb in.

As I bent down, someone hit me on the back of the head again and before I could react, I felt the jab of a needle in my neck and my limbs went slack.

“Nighty night, prick.” I heard one mutter before everything went dark.

I woke up tied to a chair with a light shining in my face.

Wincing, I tugged at the restraints on my arm and found no give at all.

“Welcome back to the land of the living,” Vinnie said from somewhere behind the light.

“What the fuck, Vinnie?” I snapped and a hand lashed out, punching me in the face.

“I am quite disappointed in you, Leo. Things had been going so well and yet here we are. Did you know how much it cost me for you to miss the fight?” He said with that bored tone and I laughed.

“Honestly, I don’t care. I’m done being at your beck and call, Vinnie.” I said before the man who hit me the first time stepped into the light, smiling down at me before his fists swung into my face, once, then twice and a third time.

I tasted blood, running my tongue over my teeth before I spat at him.

“Untie me, chicken shit and see how tough you are then.” I crooned and Vinnie stepped behind him with a gleam in his eye.

“No one embarrasses me like you did Leo, and gets to tell the tale. Now, I like you and you make me good money. So I won’t kill you. I just want to remind you what happens when you step out of line.” He said with a glance at someone else off to the side.

I heard the scraping of metal against concrete and turned to see another man with a sledgehammer.

I almost laughed, remembering seeing Katerina with one and her remark to Riley that you always needed one.

“You find that funny? We’ll see how much you are laughing by the time we are through with you.” Vinnie said with a nod.

“Don’t damage his hands. I want him to fight still.” Vinnie added before he stepped back.

“Let’s have some fun.” The man in front of me said with a laugh before he sank his fist into my stomach.

“If you hit me with the sledgehammer, I won’t be able to fight for at least six months.” I grit out, watching Vinnie turn around with a squint.

He glanced at the man with a sigh.

“He is right. Go with the toes.” He said before he walked away, leaving the others laughing.

I stared up at them, feeling the blood dripping down my face and grinned.
