I had called in a favor with Liam Walker who got me access to the files that the Hellier Police Department were building against Tommy, and I knew I had my work cut out for me.

The Proffitt name was mud in Hellier Beach and the bitterness of Minosa went deep. I never quite understood why and that had been my mission to figure out.

It was Minosa who was responsible for locking away our father which led to his death.

I shook my head, not wanting to go down that path, a path that led me to law school to fight for the injustices that were so often found in our world.

I pulled into my driveway and noticed the array of vans in my neighbors. I wonder what my prickly friend was up to.

No. Not my friend. She probably viewed me as the enemy now after I dug up her rose bushes.

What I wasn’t going to admit is I had kept the one she said was expensive and planted it in a pot in my backyard.

My intention was to give it back to her eventually. I eyed my house, a house I had purchased with the intention of putting together a nice place for Ma to live in once we got her out and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

Maybe this was it. The roses were enough of a retaliation for her to realize I would bite back.

I walked to the door and stopped when I saw the note, the scrawling feminine handwriting had the word ‘asshole’ written over the front with a big love heart next to it.

Maybe not.

Asshole.

He who dares not grasp the thorn, should never crave the rose.

I am the thorn.

Good luck getting inside.

Ever your prickly rose, K x

I stared at the note and couldn’t stop the grin from forming. Damn this woman.

I put my key into the lock and turned. It didn’t budge. She had changed the locks. Crafty. Sneaky and ingenious.

If she wasn’t such a pain in my ass, I would try to ask her out on a date. I’d never met a woman who was as irritating and insufferable as she was, and I was a masochistic bastard who got off on women who were tough as nails and just as irritating.

The only difference was, they usually couldn’t handle me or my family and the baggage that came with it.

I glanced over at her house, thinking of a way to retaliate.

Shoving her note in my pocket, I strode toward the workers, noticing they were replacing a glass door.

Interesting. I wonder what happened?

I’ll find out later. A plan formed in my mind, and I smiled. If she wanted to get more personal, I’d do the same.

I sat on my front porch with a Guinness and sighed. I was curious to see how she was going to react to my latest retaliation, especially because I got so private.

Seeing all the shattered glass inside her home and the smears of blood on the floor, however, that had me worried.

I was assured by the workmen that she was fine and had been the one to call in the job today, not that it made me feel any better.

The sun was setting, leaving a soft golden glow in its wake and my neighbor still hadn’t shown herself yet.

I had my laptop next to me and the files open to work through, and I had told myself I would sit out here to enjoy the warm autumn evening, but the reality was, I waiting to spot the little blonde bombshell to make sure she was okay.

I glanced at the time and sighed, shutting my laptop, I figured she wasn’t coming. A black SUV slowly rolled to a stop across the road, and I had a sinking feeling in my stomach as I watched a man with a pinstripe suit climb out.
