Iwatched Egor from the corner of my eye as he sat down at my father’s desk.

This meeting was called to discuss the disappearance of Katerina and the supposed empty seat left in her wake.

“Let’s get this over with,” Egor said with a sigh and my father bristled. It was no secret that he didn’t like Egor, then most people didn’t like the man.

“As you know, Katerina is missing. An abduction was attempted but no one has claimed responsibility as of yet and she has not appeared since. What does Moscow have to say about this?” My father stared at Egor, trying to intimidate him but the man simply shrugged.

“He is not interfering. He has his own issues to deal with and will back the winner.” Egor replied in that calm and calculating way.

“And who are you backing?” My father asked, leaning back in his chair.

“I have someone in mind. He arrived recently to clean things up, but it would seem the mess is a little more complicated than we would have liked.” Egor said before looking at me.

“Did you know she went missing near your house?” He said softly and I swallowed, forcing myself to look surprised.

“No. I was not aware of this. I had heard some chatter on the radio, but I was not aware that Katerina had been the target.” I glanced at my father who narrowed his eyes at me.

“Hmm. Well, Vadim, it is no secret that you want to take the throne for yourself but that won’t be happening.” Egor said as he adjusted the sleeves of his suit.

“What the hell does that mean?” My father snapped and Egor smiled.

“The man who will be taking control was here to collect on a debt owed to him which puts him in power by default,” Egor said cryptically and both my father and I looked at each other.

A sinking feeling came over me as Egor glanced at the door.

“You will see for yourself.” He said as the door opened and I had to stop myself from jumping out of my chair when I saw the man in question.

“Konstantin Petrov.” My father murmured.

Konstantin smiled slowly, the kind of smile that promised nothing but pain.

“What are you doing here?” I said softly and he raised an eyebrow at me and uttered the words that I had dreaded to hear and hoped I had stopped from ever leaving his mouth.

“I have come to claim my bride.”

“You can’t be serious about this,” I said to my father, still shocked at his decision to back Egor.

“Why not? If they deal with Katerina, then I only have to deal with them.” He said with a shrug.

“You hate Egor and Konstantin is not the kind of man who shares power.” I countered and my father snorted.

“You don’t think I know that? My plan is to let them take care of this Katerina mess, then when they aren’t looking, I’ll kill them and take the power for myself.” He said as if that were the simplest thing to do.

“This is insane. Konstantin is from a powerful family. They won’t roll over at his death. You would start a war between the families again.” I couldn’t believe the power grab my father was trying to go for.

“No. I know what I am doing. There won’t be a war.” He said, waving his hand to dismiss me.

“Father…” I started and he glared at me.

“Stop. Don’t think I am stupid enough to believe that you aren’t aware of what happened. I don’t know what your angle is, but this Katerina business will end. If you are hiding her for your own means, give her to them.” He snapped and I laughed.

“I am not hiding her, father. I have no angle other than to stop the fighting.” I said with a sigh and he shook his head.

“Leave me. I have some calls to make.” He said, dismissing me again.

I walked out, frustrated and angry at his lack of vision. If anyone had an angle, it was him and his angle was fucking stupid.

Konstantin changed things.
