“I need an outfit that saysI feel sexy with you,” I said. “But that we’re not serious.”

“That’s a lot for one outfit.” She pursed her lips and moved farther down the row of clothes with me tagging along behind her. “But how about this one.”

She pulled an emerald-green cropped cami from the rack. It had a sweetheart neckline, a baby-doll silhouette, and crisscrossed strings above a low-cut back.

It was flirty, sexy, and very me. The old me. The one who heard music. The one who was bold and danced. The one Barry believed in.

Channeling that Addy, I reached for what I wanted. I couldn’t resist being her, if only for one last time.

Addy

Iwas bold, but only so bold, wearing a fitted black jacket over my new flirty blouse. But Barry seemed to appreciate it all, including my tight dark indigo jeans and my half boots.

“Wow.” He took my hand when I met him as agreed outside the door to his restaurant. “You look amazing, Addy.”

“Thank you.” I blushed. His heated gaze said even more than his words how much he appreciated how I looked. “Rachel did my hair and makeup.” I had beach curls, subtle earth-toned eyeshadow, and coral lipstick.

“She always had a way with those things.”

“Still does.”

“How’s she holding up?” he asked.

My lips flattened. “Not as well as I would hope.”

“It’s going to take her a while.” His expression grew soft. “She loved Daniel very much.”

“Yes, and he loved her.” I stared at Barry, my eyes burning. “Daniel was a good guy. Those are rare. Difficult to get over.” And yet here I was, taking a risk with one.

“You okay, babe?” Barry captured a lock of my hair and tucked it behind my ear.

No and yes. No, because my heart was hammering with nerves. But yes, because I wanted to be here with him, to know and experience pure affection at least once in my life.

“We don’t have to go out, you know.” I turned my head to kiss his hand before he withdrew it. “We’d have more time for other things if we stay in.”

His eyes darkening, he hissed in a sharp breath that I felt between my legs, remembering the day before.

“We didn’t talk about what happened yesterday.” Barry narrowed his gaze. “Maybe we should.”

“Why?”

Studying him through my mascaraed lashes, I pulled the lapels of my jacket together. Should I have insisted on reciprocating the previous day? Or had he changed his mind about doing this with me?

“I very much want to go upstairs and get naked with you.” He gave me a dark sensual look. “But I also want to go out, talk, and share my day with you.”

“I’d like that too.” I lowered my hands to my sides. “It’s just that yesterday was very good, and—”

“Only very good?” He cocked a brow.

“You know what I mean.” Warmth returned to my cheeks.

“You’re bolder when you’re naked.”

“Only with you,” I said.

“I like how you are with me.” His mouth slowly curled. “Maybe we should stay in,” he said low.

Heat pooled between my thighs. Apparently, that voice of his was all the foreplay I needed.
