There was a light laugh. “It’s not that. It’s complicated and I can’t really explain. Just . . . a lot of things. Things aren’t that simple in the universe.”

“Universe?” I said. I bent over and grabbed my boots.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” She was brushing over that comment. I laced my boot up before I looked at Ric. I pursed my lips as I grabbed my other boot.

“Look, you deserve happiness. And I can’t be there to beat him up for you,” I replied.

“I’m happy. It’s just a lot to unpack. And any therapist out there won’t understand what I am going through.”

“What are you going through?” I asked as I picked my phone up again.

“I can’t explain it.”

“Okay then. I’ve got to go,” I said. I hung up.

“Why is Andy sad?”

“I don’t know. She’s being evasive while I’m not telling her about you. Whatever. I am not going to worry about it. Maybe I will go get fucked instead,” I snapped as I walked out of the door.

Chapter 13

Ricon

Ipulled out my comm. I had connected my comm to the ship and could communicate with the ship from outside. “Computer, why would a human be upset about a mate?”

“Are you concerned about the human you said you are most definitely not having mating urges for?”

“No, she’s talking about the Captain’s mate.”

“Humans don’t have biological mates.”

“Andy is not human.”

“Where did she grow up? What are her values? You cannot tell a human just because they are half alien, that they must accept something.”

I didn’t respond.

The computer said morosely, “Guess it is a good thing that you cannot have a mating response to a human, according to you.”

“I’m sending you my vitals from the last two weeks for you to identify when this started.”

“Okay, if you say so. That will be a good use of my time. An advanced computer looking at . . . your vitals.”

“Just do it,” I said. I laid back on the couch and finished reading the book. Unlike many beings in the universe, I knew how to speak and write English. Not just a few phrases, but fluently. There was a moment growing up, after I was conscripted into the army, I wanted to enlist with the Imperium forces. I thought learning English would help with my application. I wasn’t accepted. After a while, I found Chex’s crew. It was for the best. I was a better tech person than I was a warrior. As I was reading, I drifted off to sleep until the door slamming shut woke me.

“Well, fuck you too!” she screamed at the closed door.

I sat up. Chloe was taking off her boots. Her lips looked swollen, like she had been kissing her date. A pang of jealousy coursed through my system. I tamped it down, because I needed to soothe her.

“Chloe?”

She slowed down her motions. She blinked rapidly before taking a quick breath. “Yeah?”

“Are you okay? Do you want a hot beverage? To help with your nerves?”

She looked up at me. “I guess.” She walked to the couch and sat down. I stood up to walk to the kitchen.

I brought back two cups of tea to find Chloe sitting there with the book in her hand. “You got a sci-fi romance book for yourself?”
