Warmth gathered on my cheeks. “I just wanted to see what you liked.” Soothing pheromones swirled around me. This couldn’t be related to a mating urge.

She smirked as she put it down. I passed the mug to her. She smiled as she patted the seat beside me. “So, what do you think about this one?”

“I finished it. I don’t like this one. Reminds me of my boss.”

Confusion crossed her face as her brows furrowed. “What? Why?”

I shook my head as I sat beside her. “It’s complicated. What happened to your date?”

She laughed lightly. “It’s also complicated. I just felt all sorts of warring emotions when I left. Maybe I am PMSing. I don’t know. I felt better when I got into his car. But . . . then, things didn’t turn out like I expected. We started making out but . . . it was like . . .” Her cheeks were flushing. “Nothing was happening,”

I wasn’t sure what she was talking about. A lot of what she said made little sense to me. “What do you like about those books?” Why did I ask that? Why am I torturing myself like this?

She looked up at me as a smile spread across her face. “Like my favorite alien features? I don’t know. Tails and tentacles can give certain options with restraints and extra . . . sensations. It all depends on what the author has done. But sometimes it’s not about the extras. It’s about how the aliens are better than human men.”

I grunted. “But you don’t like biological mates?”

She made a face as confusion crossed her face again. “What? You mean fated mates? Like soulmates? Do they exist in real life? I don’t think so. It seems like an impossible dream. And that’s the only reason it is so tempting. And where is the choice in that? Would I really want that? Like really? And depending on what book you read, fated mates don’t always work out. It’s a nice dream, but not for me.”

“Okay.”

“What about you? What sort of aliens do you like?”

Chloe. That’s what I like. I paused and blinked. No, I can’t say that. Plus, the computer will find out what’s going on with my pheromones. I’ll know soon, but there’s so much going on here. Maybe Earth’s atmosphere causes mating urges. Yes, that could be it. I’ll ask it to check. I pulled out my comm and typed a message to the computer.

Computer

You really are a piece of work, but I will check into this.

“I am not sure. Probably not tails. You don’t need tails. What are your feelings on horns?” What would it feel like with her human hands touching and rubbing my horns?

She shrugged. “Makes no difference to me. I know there are all sorts of UFO stories and stuff but I don’t think I’m getting abducted anytime soon.” Chloe finished drinking her tea. “Thanks. It’s nice to have a friend here, especially with Andy gone. I’ve missed having a ride or die like that.”

“Yes, that’s me. Your ‘ride or die.’”

Chloe stood up and walked to the kitchen. I sighed, watching her hips sway as she walked away from me. Yes, Earth’s atmosphere must be triggering a response.

Not Chloe.

She was human. I hadn’t heard of any mating responses with my kind and humans. Plus there was the knot factor. I didn’t want to hurt her in any way. Human men didn’t have knots and she was too precious. A few years ago, a rumor floated on the darknet that a morynth had forced a knot on a human when they weren’t mates. It didn’t end well. I didn’t want to confuse these feelings and hurt her.

Never her.

Chapter 14

Chloe

Isighed as I sat at my desk again. Yesterday was weird. Every moment in the house was a flurry of emotion and I didn’t think they were all mine. When I went on my date, it improved but I couldn’t get aroused by my date. We made out in his car for a long time but I felt nothing. The guy got mad, and I didn’t want to see him again. Embarrassment filled my soul. I didn’t like how he treated me after I said we couldn’t have sex. This was going to be so awkward. Why did I mess with a coworker? What insults would he hurl my way because I didn’t put out? Would this affect my job? My nose wrinkled at the thought. I was avoiding the break room and the other labs.

My phone beeped. I glanced at the screen. It was Andy again.

“What’s been going on with you? Tell me the truth.”

“I’ve just been talking to my dad. It’s a lot.”

“Your dad? You know who he is?”

“It’s complicated. But oh, well. There’s just been a lot going on lately and I haven’t had time to adjust to it. It’s not fair. I just want a moment to breathe.”
