“Okay. So alert you if someone suspicious comes by. How will I know?”
“I don’t know. Someone looking for my mom? Or me? Or saying weird things? Just be alert. There are bad people in the universe.”
“The universe? You think your mom is that important?” I said with a laugh. “I mean, she was like a second mom to me, but the universe?”
Andy groaned. “It’s complicated.”
“When are you going to open up to me? You keep calling me because you want to talk, but you aren’t saying anything. I thought we were best friends. I miss you and I wish you would let me in.”
“I can’t.”
“Fine.”
“Fine.”
“I’ve got to go back to work then. Bye.” I hung up. I put my head in my hands. God, I missed my best friend so much. My phone beeped. A text appeared on the screen:if you are experiencing feelings that are not yours, please text me right away and find somewhere safe.I rolled my eyes. Whatever was going on with Andy, I was getting close to my limit.

“According to all this data, your mating instincts activated when you landed on Earth.”
“Because of Earth’s atmosphere?”
“No, stupid. A human. My guess is one you have spent time with lately.”
“No.”
“This is what the data says.”
“Why would I be having a mating instinct for someone I was already attracted to beforehand but never met in person? It’s too much of a coincidence.”
“I do not know. Maybe there is a compulsion deep down.”
“Meeting in person had to happen first, though. At least for my kind.”
“I am just telling you what the data says.”
“The data is wrong.”
“Data cannot be wrong,” the computer said. The screen flashed with a looping video of a pale human with the wordsNo lies detected underneath.
I sighed. “Check if my comm is operating properly.”
“It is.”
“Check it again. She can’t be my mate.”
“Okay.”
I threw my tools down. “Do you have any more information about the crashed ships?”
“Oh, yes!” An image of a man appeared, wearing a white lab coat. “They are at Grinnen Labs. And lucky for you,” an image of Chloe appeared on the screen. “You have an in at the location.”
I stared at the screen. Pheromones wafted through the air as I stared at her picture. “Ya know, you’re spilling, right?”
My hearts raced as I steeled my jaw as I looked away. “She can’t be my mate.”
