“Then tell them to drop you off at a spa and take a moment to breathe.”

She sighed again. “That wouldn’t work. I would have to bring my bodyguards.”

“You have bodyguards, like a mafia princess?”

“It’s necessary. I guess. One time, someone tried to nab me in my sleep.”

“Why didn’t your beau help?”

“He tried. We were asleep. It’s complicated.”

“Guess he needs to get in tune with his inner warrior. I just read a book about electric alien warriors.”

“You better watch out with that alien stuff. You might find out they are real,” she said. There wasn’t laughter in her voice.

I rolled my eyes. She couldn’t see. She rarely video chatted with me these days. “I know aliens are real. I’m going to a con soon. What should I dress up as?”

“I don’t know.”

“I really miss you, Andy. Are you coming back home sometime?”

“Only if I can bring my bodyguards.”

“Are they hot?”

She laughed. “I don’t know. Not my cup of tea. My man is my cup of tea.”

“What if it’s Stockholm Syndrome?” I asked.

More laughter. “It’s not. It’s . . . fate.”

I groaned. “Hey, what do your gut feelings feel like? Is it contagious?”

There was a pause. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. It’s weird. Like . . . I felt like I was feeling someone else’s feelings yesterday. Like . . . lust that isn’t mine?”

“What I have isn’t contagious. That’s crazy.”

“Do you not believe me? It’s not like I was the one horny! After thinking about it, I was wondering if that is how you feel all the time.”

“No. It’s not that. Hold on.” After a few moments, she came back on the line. “Have you been around anyone suspicious? It really worries me you are alone in that house. They took me from that house.”

“You don’t want to sell it, right?”

“No. It’s just . . . what if someone else goes after you?”

“Don’t worry. I have a big, muscular man who will protect me. Or I hope so. I haven’t asked.”

“What about when he leaves? Back to the point. Have you been around anyone new?”

Yes. “No.”

“Well, if anyone suspicious comes around, you need to tell me.” I told Ric about the weird men that came to my house a few weeks ago. Shivers went down my back as I remembered them.

“That doesn’t answer my question. Is that what your ESP feels like?”

“It’s not ESP. I’ve told you that. Stop making fun of me.”
