“Maybe it is your human DNA.”

“No other human woman has wanted you to throw her on the floor and fuck her until she was boneless.”

The image of pushing cute Chloe into the ground and having my way with her flitted through my mind. She would be so lovely mewling against the ground the way she does. Her hips gyrating against my cocks as she came. I shook my head. “I don’t know why it affects you so much.”

“I want your knot. Maybe that’s it.”

“I can’t. I told you. It’s for my mate.”

She turned to me. “Why?”

“Our mates were created to take our knot. It would injure anyone who isn’t our mate. It can’t be you.”

“Why not?” Fury was raging on her face. There were so many lies that had been told to her over the last few weeks.

“You’re human.”

“Point?”

“I liked you before I met you. Mating bonds aren’t like that. The bond. It’s biochemical. It’s pheromones. It can’t be you because of that, Chloe.” My head dipped down as I rubbed the back of my neck while shame poured through me. “I don’t know if it’s love, but the moment I saw you, I had to have you in my life. I should have never talked to you. What I did was wrong.”

Her eyes narrowed suspiciously as she turned around. She shoved her trash in her bag. “Lunchtime is over.” Chloe got out of the car and slammed the door so hard the car shook.

I stepped out and followed her. “Chloe? I’m sorry. Sorry I did all of this. I was selfish.”

“I didn’t say I needed an apology.”

The colleague from Chloe’s failed date approached the sidewalk. He snickered as he walked beside me. “She piss you off too? Told you. Frigid bitch.”

“Frax off, human,” I hissed as I sped up. I followed Chloe back into the office. When we arrived at the lab, there was a cupcake on her desk. She stilled as she looked at it. The slight scent of her fear wafted through the room. She picked it up and threw it into the trash.

“Why’d you do that?”

“No one likes me enough to save me a cupcake from whatever party around here. Those aliens did that. They are trying to poison me.”

“That sounds ludicrous.”

“They want the ships. And I have access to them.”

“Do you have access?”

Her eyes drifted to the locked drawer in the desk. “It’s only for emergencies. If I need to remove the doc. Like if there is a fire.”

Chapter 32

Chloe

Idon’t think Ric—No, it’s Ricon—believed me.

For once, that thrum of arousal was mostly gone. Fear of the aliens that wanted me and the anger at being lied to filled my body instead. Ricon sighed and turned back into the hallway where the doctor was probably working. I really wished I didn’t have to work, but I needed this job, not that I did much anyway. I couldn’t flake on it. The pay was too good. I crumpled into my desk chair and pulled my knees to my chest. I pursed my lips as I rested my head on the tops of my knees. Tears threatened to spill over my cheeks, and I blinked furiously. Everyone had been lying to me for weeks. My best friend. My . . . what do I even call him? Fuck buddy? He was a friend I flirted with for weeks before showing up unexpectedly at my door. There had been times I had wished we could be together. He seemed like a good dude.

A good dude that wasn’t upfront with me for weeks. Catfished me. Gaslit me about aliens. Somewhere in my head, I thought we connected, but . . . maybe we didn’t. At one point, Ricon was becoming as good of a friend as Andy. I didn’t have many close friends. It was only Andy. Then Andy disappeared, lied to me, and . . . I’m just alone. I’m alone, like always. Ricon, Andy, everyone has abandoned me. Why couldn’t they tell me the truth? Was Andy abducted by aliens? Why would those men have wanted her unless . . .

As I sat up, I could feel the weight of my phone in my hand, its smooth surface cool to the touch. I opened the text chain with Pixa.
