I am not sure at the moment. But for this conversation, and the copious amount of Earth films I have watched, I am a girl. Girl to girl, you need to get on that knot or you will die. You are his mate. You would not be affected by his pheromones otherwise. I am not sure why he cannot see it. Men. You know?

Me

I guess.

I put the phone down and sighed. I didn’t know what to do. Was Ricon in denial because he didn’t want me? Or was it because I was human? Was there something wrong with me? No one wanted me. My shoulders slumped as I sat in the chair. My fingers tapped the side of my e-reader. There was a reason I loved the alien books so much. The idea of someone wanting to have me, no matter what, was the ultimate dream.

Chapter 33

Ricon

There was a package on the doorstep.

Chloe was still getting her bag out of the car when I walked to the steps and picked it up. I shook it and looked at her. “What’d you get?”

She turned slowly, her eyes tracking to the box, and they widened. She ran to me and jerked the box out of my hand. Her arousal drifted toward my nose. My nostrils flared as more pheromones leaked. She swallowed. “Stop that. I’m assuming those are your pheromones.”

“You stop that. You smell so good.”

She narrowed her eyes. “I can’t control my arousal.”

“Maybe the ship is right,” she said as she walked inside. I followed her inside the house.

“No. It’s not possible,” I argued.

“Pixa said all the signs point to it.”

“It is wrong. It can’t be you. I told you.”

Her eyes narrowed as she glared at me. “Can you please turn them off?”

“No. I can’t control it. Not since my mate activated the mating response.”

“You’re torturing me,” she whispered.

My hand slid through my hair. “I’ve tried. I’ve really tried. You smell so good and needy.”

Her head ducked down as her hair covered her face. “It’s getting worse every day. I don’t know if I can survive this.”

“You’ve listened to the ship too much.”

“No. This is me saying it. I’m not acting like myself.” She turned and unlocked the door.

“It can’t be you.”

She sniffed. I couldn’t see her face to understand what she was thinking. “It never is.” She walked away from me and slammed the door to her room. Faint sobs came through the door.

“Chloe?”

“Leave me alone.”

“Can you talk to me, please?”

“You ignored me when I told you how I felt. I need to be alone.”

I sighed. “What about dinner? You need to eat.”

“I’ll be fine.”
