I sighed. Chex looked puzzled. “Why is your ship arguing with you?”

“I think someone programmed it to be sentient or something. It’s weird,” I replied.

“You’re on a different ship?”

“It was the closest ship in the bay. Grabbed it and went. Firefight. Explosions. Crash.”

“Do you think you can send me the hybrid list?” he asked.

“I don’t want to send it over the net. It’s why I didn’t send it earlier.”

“Fine. Do what you’ve got to do. We have an issue, though.”

“What is that?”

“Andy sent an alien I don’t trust to protect Chloe, and now he’s disappeared.” According to the note, he went to the NaughtyFans girl. But I wasn’t supposed to know that.

“I’ll see you in a little while.”

“Fine.”

I stepped into Ricon’s ready room. Since he met Andy, things had changed. I looked around, expecting to see Orequin. Orequin was not there, but Rashi’id was. “Where is Orequin?”

“Orequin went with Andy. She needed a vacation,” he replied.

“How is she going to blend in with the humans?”

“I don’t know. She told me she ‘has it figured out.’ She’s in a private area with her boyfriend. She works hard and deserves it.”

“I wasn’t saying she doesn’t. She’s just . . . a freaky, walking, talking plant to humans.”

“Her boyfriend is helping. Don’t worry about it.”

With a hint of annoyance, I rolled my eyes and shook my head. I passed him the tablet, the soft glow of the screen illuminating his face. I ensured that all the data was stored in a secure, offline environment, so it couldn't be accessed remotely or linked to the space station. Chex nodded as he put it on his desk. “You did good.”

“How? He got lost. How did he do good?” Rashi’id mumbled. “I could have done better.”

“Rashi’id!”

I shrugged. “There were bumps along the way. I think I ran into my mate at the space station.”

Rashi’id looked puzzled as he stared at me. His red tail swished behind him. His people didn’t have the same social mores about their tails as Chex’s kind, but he didn’t always swish it around all the time. He said that when he was in the bowels of the ship; it was safer to keep it contained.

“Why are you here?”

“He wants to be more than an engineer. So we were talking about things he could do.”

“How about Xyxyl? You’re mated so you need to find something where you won’t be too far from him.”

Rashi’id’s eyes narrowed. “But you’re mated too. Linked. Done. Like I am.”

My smile faded. “No.” He couldn’t know. It couldn’t be true. I couldn’t have?—

Rashi’id’s eyebrow raised. “Yes.”

“Ricon, where have you been?” Chex asked.

“Hiding low.”
